    Personally looking to do Flatbed

I’m a very active person, and I’d like to remain somewhat active while trucking, and I know flatbed would definitely keep me that way compared to reefer or dry van

as for the used truck, he was an owner operator too with his own authority, he hauled just about everything as a “power only” guy

With flatbed, it's much easier to get reliable hometime. Unless you for Western Express or Melton, most other flatbed companies cane get you home one a week or more. Most flatbed companies have freight that operates in regular business hrs.

Talk to McElroy drivers, especially any that live in your area. ANYTHING is possible, it's possible the Loch Ness Monster will trip on the sidewalk where you live. It may not be likely, ever. I would ask the company to have a driver that lives in the Lexington area contact you to find out about the company. I would ask about McElroy in the Flatbed forum. You should consider going to a truck stop near you and looking for an McElroy trucks fueling or drivers going inside the truck stop and ask them if they have a moment to tell you about the company, "I'm only asking about your company, I'm not selling anything or asking for money or a ride." Regardless of which company you consider READING COMPANY WEB SITES AND ASKING RECRUITERS WILL NOT TELL YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW. Finding a good job can't really be done online only. The company that hires you will not change their operation to give you what you want. The company will give you the pay and conditions they give to new-hires. If you don't find out what things you need and what things they provide you will probably leave the industry very quickly, like 80% of brand new CDL holders. It's your job to find out what you need to know

    Rumble.....

Unless your first employer/carrier has a terminal 2 hours away, or less...&/or you have sufficient space on your own/family property -- BE SURE to carefully research your home time parking options -- BEFORE you sign on with A-N-Y carrier.

Make sure any/all of your chosen local home time parking options are okay with your employer's parking acceptable criteria. Also: if you decide to park a trailer by itself -- BE SURE to find & use a heavy duty kingpin lock that is tough to remove/defeat (hint: don't be cheap).

Hats off to you for starting out with flatbed....but...be advised: starting out working tarps in snow/ice/windy conditions (plus -- learning how to drive a big rig)....all AT THE SAME TIME -- will suck enormously.

If possible: wait until the spring to start learning flatbed -- & do flatbed next winter when your learning curve then is much less steep.

If home time is important to you, & you are serious about flatbed -- your search for a "starter" carrier just wouldn't be complete without at least checking out Roehl Transport:

Roehl Transport -- hires/trains rookie drivers -- Lexington, KY

Roehl will offer you more & better home time options than those other flatbed fleets.

Also: with Roehl -- you can do not only flatbed -- but also conestoga/curtainside loads, as well.

    Best of luck....
