Basically...it is a legal DOT clock technique that allows a driver the option to split up his/her sleeper berth time....to allow for adequate driving time to leave a location....& get to a next stop &/or a place where big rig parking is safe & permitted.

The better CDL jobs/carriers don't use it -- & don't even need it.

Also -- you can of course always just google it.

The main problem with split sleeper: it pretty much turns your sleep into a series of catnaps. Nooooottt cool.

Still another suggestion....

while you are busy qualifying for WIOA -- contact/visit your nearest Old Dominion Freight Line office, or terminal -- & ask them for a list of nearby CDL driving schools from which they prefer to hire.

Then later...attend & graduate from one of those CDL schools.

Old Dominion (as well as most of the rest of the LTL trucking sector) will also require you to have ALL of the relevant CDL endorsements: tanker, hazmat....& doubles/triples.

It's a complicated rule and it will sound 100 times more complicated when it is explained than it really is. Avoid Split-Sleeper rule unless you begin the day and know you will use it that day/night. Once you use up your legal driving time, there is no shortcut to start driving again before 10 hours off or sleeper. Reefer drivers seem to use it more than other drivers. Not doing split-sleeper exactly right will create what DOT calls an "egregious HOS violation." Instead of violating the Hours of Service rules by 15 or 30 minutes, you violate the HOS rules by 4, 5, or 6 hours. Just ignore it until your trainer explains it.

 

It's easier to get all the endorsements during CDL school than come back to the driver license office for each one as you decide to get them. You buy a dozen eggs at once, not one at a time. All but the HazMat endorsement are cheap, easy tests, and last as long as you have a CDL. They transfer state to state. HazMat is $100-150, only lasts 5 years, and DOESN'T transfer to another state unless you take the test and give fingerprints again. If you can get on Old Dominion right out of school, do it. It's like winning the trucking lottery if you want a good job with a big company. If you are happy to follow company rules you will be good for the Less Than Truckload (LTL) carriers. If you are a cowboy at heart do not do LTL.
