359 hood

    Hey guys, got a few quest or you all. I am going to paint my 359, but I have to do some hood repairs first, as I’ve got some pretty significant hail damage. Friend of mine has a hood off a little window 359 that is in perfect condition and can be bought cheap, but I was taking measurements, and a few measurements didn’t exactly match. The mounting brackets, height of the hood, and width all checked out, however the length of the hood was a 1/2-3/4” shorter than mine. Most of the brackets and cushions the hood rides on would have to be modified to the new hood, but I’m not as worried about that, as the actual fitment of the hood. Any advice of these length differences? The other idea I’m toying with is replacing the 3 or 4 hood panels on my current hood, but if the other hood will work out it sure would save me a lot of time fighting all those rivets on the hood panels. . thanks in advance for the advice

    If you’re gonna replace 3 or 4 panels may i suggest a jig to set in and square it up. It’s not rocket science but it ain’t easy either

    Using a hood from a ‘67-72 Unilite on a ‘73 on up 1100 wont look right. If you are a person who has a keen eye for details you will always notice the small things that They are visibly different. You will either like it or hate it. Radiator shell is the main part that is different in the way it is rolled, cut, and riveted on from the later ‘73 1100 cab ones. Earlier ones from 67-70 were lightweight construction. Lighter aluminum and less bracing. 71-72 got heavier with the use of some steel bracing. Main reason was the rear mounted steering box on them would put the draglink right into the LH hood mount cradle down at the bottom and rear of the fender when in a hard turn and cause the side bracing inside the hood to rip out of the rivets and/or the rubber hood hold down straps would break. The ones with power steering had the problem the most. Manual wasn’t much of an issue. Different box and pitman arm angle.

    I was definitely thinking about this. If taking that many panels off, I will have to figure out how to keep it true when putting it back together.

    Thank you for the info. I’m not after a show truck or anything, just a slick work truck so little differences don’t bother me. Some modifications have already been made to the truck before I bought it so it’s not like I’m trying to keep it original or anything.
