Theoretically, If the dipstick shows no oil on it, does it mean the engine has no oil in it? What if the dipstick is not bone dry but gets little spots of oil on it when checking?
After that let’s say you go for an oil change, plenty of oil is still in the oil pan as can be seen when draining, but not filled enough that it shows on the dipstick, will it have damaged the engine?
What does overfilling oil do to an engine?
Asking out of curiosity.
Does no oil on dipstick mean no oil in engine?

Dipsticks don't normally touch the bottom of the pan. They might only show the top 2 or 3 gallons. As long as the oil pickup is covered there should be oil getting pumped through the system.
Still, keep it between add and full. Manufacturer put those markings there for a reason.Bean Jr., Tb0n3, LoneRanger and 8 others Thank this. -

Steps for checking engine oil
1. Open hood. If unsure how, return your flip flops to wally world- you're not worthy.
2a. Locate dipstick- usually has a T-shaped handle attached. Typically located close to frame rail. If found, proceed to step 3. If not located go to step 2b.
2b. If unable to locate, just look for codriver. You've found the dipstick. Once found, smack upside the head and revert to step 1, and begin the steps again, making codriver perform the steps.
Step 3. Remove dipstick. If oil is found to be below full mark, turn dipstick upside down until oil runs to full mark. Proceed to close hood and drive truck. If no oil is present, proceed to step 4.
Step 4. Close hood, using codriver's head as a buffer to prevent codriver from multiplying. Begin driving truck. Call Muhammad and pray to Allah.Oxbow, LoneRanger, Hammer166 and 7 others Thank this. -
