Too be honest in 74 when I first started, I didn't even have a class A license.. But just listening to the CB and at the truck stop lunch counters was how I learned most of what I know.
Watching others and asking when the opportunity came about.
And of course making mistakes...
Not catastrophic ones but the kind you learned from and that made you a better and more conscientious driver.
Respecting the old timers ways and never letting myself think I knew it all.
As a 51 year truck driver who is retiring in a few short months I still look to learn every single day I'm out here.
Must have worked because I've never had an accident, not even a ticket since 1987.
It's a different world now truck wise but a person can still have that same mindset and do well out here.UnderdogVigilante, tscottme, kemosabi49 and 5 others Thank this. -
Just an update y'all. I'll be going for orientation early may and beginning classes end of may. I've been studying a bit (took 2 weeks off because of stomach issues). Getting more anxious as time gets closer. I'll be going to get my DOT physical.and take my CDLP about a week before I start classes

I'm not afraid of mistakes because I know I can learn from them. Happy early retirement.
I know everyday provides new opportunities to learn and I'm going to welcome it all with open arms. I've decided I'd like to do reefer. I ruled out flatbed because there is no way my 130 pound self can wrestle with those tarps..I do however have a question
Do i have to learn flatbed to do Conestoga? I'm also paying for my tanker certification. And Hazmat as well.Dennixx Thanks this. -
Don't neccessarily sell yourself short.
Several years ago I met a solo, 73yr old, flatbedding gal that couldn't have stood over 5' & razor thin. Think she said she'd been at it over 40yrs. Husband had passed years before. Spunky as all getout.
I have only run reefer & van last 13yrs, but I'm sure you will have to learn securement for Conestoga. After all, it's just covered flatbed. It's not a big deal.UnderdogVigilante Thanks this. -
Not all flatbed freight is tarped and I've heard some won't even allow the driver to try and lift them onto the deck, but is required to be forked on
Getting all endorsements and hazmat is a good thing. The cost is minimal and you'll have it all your career long...plus it let's you fly pre -check.
Good luck and just remember, as a professional driver your skills and the expectations that come with it will be required to exceed the motoring publics...and I have to remind myself every day.Last edited: Apr 8, 2025
