truckermike, thanks for your post. I am going to orientation on the 5th. do they try to set a student up with company driver if you are going company versus a l/o if you are going to do that? or is it first come first serve?

The biggest deal is to match up the nonsmokers with nonsmokers... then its pretty much first come, first served.

If you have zero experience driving a truck, you might want to consider learning a little about one of the toughest businesses in America before you decide you know enough about this business to lease a truck... and put your money, driving career and future on the line.

hey iron pony got a couple questions for ya look i have read just about every post on here about prime.ok when they say 11 western does that mean just 11 or does that mean anything west of mississippi river like the other companys?and when they say 60000 i read a post that said dispatched miles for example say its 2000 you got credit for 4000 which dont sound right to me but hey if so cool lol. also is it still 80000 to get that 34 or 36 mile pay?im sorry i am asking you these question i try to ask the recruter them but everytime im on the phone with her the line is going crazy.her name is shreil.and last how long does it take and as the trainne do you stay out the whole time or do you get time off when trainner takes his?im asking you these question cause i see you are a co driver which i will be the same.i dont want to be a l/o until i no what im doing lol.and the freight is booming like it was a couple years ago.well thank you once again and i guess and co driver from prime could answer these questions for me

It means 11 western 99.5% of the time. I rarely see a CHD truck out east, but it does happen - remember, they move freight, not just cater to what we want. I've "heard" they'll ask you first, but I have no way of knowing that. It also means that if you want a change of scenery, you can get it.

Prime doesn't use "practical" miles when dispatching, but uses HMG miles. There's a lot of biotchin' in the industry about it, but that's the way it works - so its more like they got credit for 2000 miles out of the HMG table, but ran around 2200 practical "real" miles to get it. Ain't worth worrying over.

At 60000, you can elect to go solo for the last 20000, or you can stay with your trainer for that last 20000.

You get paid 30 cpm if you go solo, but it takes longer.

You get training pay if you stay with your trainer, it goes faster because you're in a team truck, and you have to put up with him/her!

    :biggrin_25520:

Training can take 3 to 4 months - sounds like a long time, but it goes by quickly. This is a really dangerous business, and there's a lot more to it than just hanging onto a steering wheel. It's best to get all the training you can - if you look at some of these threads, there's a lot of experienced drivers wishing the guys who get their ticket in 5 to 10 weeks actually go more time with a trainer.

You can ask for home time during training - that will extend the time you're out, and you don't get paid for it. You have to be available for dispatch to get paid... that doesn't happen veggin' in front of the tube with your woman. How it happens is up to you, your trainer and your FM - it may mean you get home time when your trainer does if you live near him. It may mean you get dropped off, and they get your trainer another load to pick you up.

BTW, Cheryl was my recruiter too - she's humongously busy, but she was always straight-up with me. A mistake many people make with their recruiters is taking the answers the recruiter provides, and reading it in terms of what you want to hear - don't do that!

    Good luck man!
