The system is designed for you to be randomly inspected if you are engaged in interstate commerce. If that doesnt' happen and you have to seek it out just to get work then it isn't random, it's an added regulation that wasn't in the original gameplan. Carriers simply shouldn't have to prove themselves over and above the million ways we already do. The failure is not with the legitimate carrier, myself in this case, it's with the random inspection system and law enforcement not figuring out a way to deal with fraud, leaving brokers no choice but to come up with stupid rules like this and leaving carriers holding the bag. Then you add the BS that you can't even get a voluntary inspection some places.
It's a system that puts the small carrier who runs clean out of business, not by design but by lack of enforcement, both law enforcement and DOT enforcement.
Here's a simple way to fix it. Scales see you coming, they know who you are. Why don't they pull you in and give you at least a level 3 on the 366th since your last inspection?
I'm all for private businesses to work around government regulations as best they can but the way private businesses are doing it now (read brokerages) they are punishing the wrong people.Lite bug, singlescrewshaker and TheLoadOut Thank this. -
Weigh stations get enough trucks to inspect by filtering only for tire pressure and temp most of the time. Due to that they ignore the flags from the fed to inspect based on other metrics like date of last inspection and late new entrant audit.
Drivewyze participates in the feds in motion credentialing program soooo... state cops and highway patrol will snatch you out of a pack so they can get a quick inspection. Your phone is a homing beacon that leads them right to you if you're using the drivewyze app.

I have all the docs from the fmcsa website and a few state dots that outline the whole structure so it's just not widespread info which is why I said "crazy" but it's public info and real.
Cancel sub when you get your inspection as well -
All the tools are available for them to implement a good system but they choose to outsource it to protect their margins.
It's the same as a nightclub that has a bunch of fights blaming the sheriff's office instead of hiring bouncers.
Walmart can't outsource their loss prevention to unpaid sheriff's deputies86scotty Thanks this. -
Safer check is free and the simplest way to see if an MC# calling on a load has any equipment at all: inspections mean you were 100% physically present on the road; no inspections may mean that you have sold the equipment, sold the MC#, and now someone is running a fraud among other possible scenarios.
That's not what it was designed for but the brokers use it because it somehow works for them. I guess, there's enough carriers with inspections vs those without and, evidently, the number of cases that bad carriers with inspection wouldn't get the job done is lower than the risk of entrusting a carrier without inspections, no matter how good the carrier might be.
The sad side of it is that by doing that, they ignore and disregard all the good work ethics and equipment care of the likes of the OP which is an essential part of being reliable and safe and, it takes money and effort. So now, you have someone with questionable safety record laughing at you because they got the load and you didn't.
I would not count on this situation to improve for owner operators like op because it simply works for brokers and the downside effects are ignorable.
The only way is to find inspections. I wouldn't do anything stupid like behaving provocatively but I'd hide the prepass for the time being and go to places when they have scales open 24/7. I'd book a long haul to Northwest. IA, ID, MT, WA scales is where you have a better chance they may inspect you. Those women working at the Utah port of entries are very friendly too...smile, tell'em they smell good, and ask for an inspection.Lite bug and Folk Fries Thank this. -
This thread is becoming my theme song for about 8 months. I went to the scale house the other day to ask about getting inspected, no we don’t do that was my answer.
I told my wife I should take my name off of my truck and tape a piece of cardboard with my name and numbers on them and run around until I get inspected.
The guy at the scale said you got old numbers but you are a hotshot and was surprised that I was running into that problem.
Sad to see the brokers asking about a ELD as I have a 99 and don’t use one.
Oh well every broker does not need a carrier who is safe and dependable who have served his country as well as his customers and can communicate but some appreciate one that can.singlescrewshaker, 86scotty, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this. -
The last thing I want to hear after spending 2 hours looking and find the load going back home.singlescrewshaker and 86scotty Thank this. -
