    I thought they both had a 6.5” stroke. I haven’t been around many, so I ain’t sure. I know the 08 was about 300 more cubits. And like with all V8’s I think the fuel crisis is really what squashed them.

    I got to doubting myself about running a D9R with a HEUI 3408. For those who aren't familiar, I believe the HEUI acronym stands for hydraulicly activated electronically controlled unit injectors.

    I think that this version of 3408 was classified as an E. If so, it's interesting that the same block was used. Possibly from the pre-cup motors to HEUI motors? I'm talking way above my pay grade, but I find it interesting if it's true that in heavy equipment they went to HEUI while in truck engines they didn't.

    Hopefully you can shed some light on this.

    That 3408 HUEI is the same motor the enhanced durability kit pistons for the small pin B’s come out of.

    The reason they went HUEI on the electronic V8’s was they wanted to keep the push tube design and run a single cam. The electronic unit injector needs a cam to fire the plunger. All the electric solenoid does is close the spill port off to trap fuel in the injector body. Naturally it controls how much fuel is trapped. And when it’s trapped.

    With out an injector cam lobe HUEI was the easiest fix as the high pressure oil is there to fire the injector plunger while the solenoid just closes the spill port exactly like the EUI injector controlling when and how much fuel is trapped. While the high pressure oil decides how hard the plunger fires. Had they not went HUEI they were looking at either a twin cam set up one in each head or redesigning the block to add a cam lobe to the cam shaft. The injector lobe, push tube rocker is the Achilles heel in any of those designs due the the pressure of injecting the fuel. It’s no secret overhead cam takes out all valve train deflection and is just a stronger more reliable set up.

    I read somewhere that the fuel crisis is what squashed the Powerliner trucks that Freightliner made sometime in the 70’s. So I’m sure between that and the weight that’s what got them. I’ve also read that the weight got the 08’s. They were put in trucks from 75 to 85. Though I have seen videos of 2 that are titled 86 that claim they left the factory with a 3408. Had to be a few hold overs.


    The 08’s had a 5.98 or 6 inch stroke.
