One of the many advantages of doing CDL school on your own --> several different carriers may visit your class -- to tell you about their offerings, & (of course) solicit your services.
This approach gives you a much broader perspective of what the industry currently has to offer (especially in your geographic area) -- vs merely signing up with one specific carrier for both schooling & employment.
When a carrier visits your school, some suggestions to maximize the leverage of this benefit:
The first year or two is by far the hardest; your are learning A LOT of new skill sets -- & often in a hurry....&/or on the job.
- Don't hesitate to ask questions. For example: find out what areas/lanes they typically run.
- Find out how long you will be in training -- & especially how long you will be out on a trainer's truck. I recommend AT LEAST 3 WEEKS. Longer is of course better.
- Get business cards. Try to establish a rapport with the visitors. Make sure they get your name.
- If you need/want flatbed experience -- note that ATS is NOT a starter carrier. If a flatbed carrier visits your CDL school -- be sure to be there for that visit. Some flatbed-only fleets that might show up there looking for novice driver recruits to train: Maverick, TMC, Melton, McElroy.
Best of luck.....

I spoke with TMC today. They have a terminal very near to my house and are talking about offering me a regional/flatbed home weekly position. I have to send them my learners permit on Monday after I test and they have asked for my IRS transcripts to verify employment history.
I think this might be a good fit and hope it works out. If not, I will write a check toTranstech ($4,900). Transtech is in my town. Sort of concerned about them as I cannot find anything about them on any of the forums.austinmike and Chinatown Thank this. -

I do not know what I don't know. What are the pros and cons of mileage vs percentage?austinmike Thanks this. -
That all sounds fine -- but I remain less than convinced that TMC is a good place to run teams.

It probably isn't and it will be a while before my fiancé is ready to join me. She submitted her retirement papers yesterday. Her last day in the Army will be 1 June 2026. How I see this laying out is I will drive for TMC for a year. At some point near the end of that year she will get her license. The next six months or so is sort of vague, but after she has six months OTR, we can then begin pursuing DoD loads as a team.
Right now my near term goal is to finish studying for the CLP and take the test on Monday. -
You can get flatbed experience while your wife is attending cdl school. After she graduates, then reconsider where you both can team with her having no experience.
The big bucks, her with no experience, is with Old Dominion. Make over $100G each per year at Old Dominion.austinmike and econnor65 Thank this. -
