Maybe son doesn’t have some one asking. Maybe just maybe a parent came here on their own before dropping the money for the kids education to see if it was viable as part of their decision making. Keep pounding on that keyboard from ya mama’s basement

He asked for opinions and I gave him mine.

And you are entitled to give him your opinion, whatever that might mean.

You came to the right place for it - and it’s valuable knowledge that may prevent cost/heartache/wasted time.

First thing I thought was grain harvest, then county/state jobs.

If your son is seriously considering this, I'd suggest a local milk hauler, doing farm pickups. He'll get really good a backing, and driving in the snow.

Have a buddy that did that when he turned 18. The pay wasn't the best at the first company, but he gained valuable experience, which helped him land a better deal once he was 21. He's 40 years old now, paid off house and a really nice camper in the driveway.

I started at a farm machinery dealer. Worked on the shop when I was 15, they helped me get my license at 18, and I was their truck driver for 10 years after that. But I guess with the ELDT training requirements, one can't do it that way anymore, which is kind of ridiculous. I'm all for more training, but I also think the way my buddy and I (and many others) started , can be just as good as any school

We are in Kansas so transporting grain could be an ideal thing for him. Thanks.

Either way - you have to instill in him the recognition that to hold a CDL A , the record must be immaculate and clean - no speeding tickets , and the usual fun stuff that youngsters enjoy.

So many on here are stymied in their career paths by infractions that the regular public do not consider.

A lot of us old guy's started young, and I don't even remember how I learned to drive. But raised on a farm, had to fix things that broke, feed and treat animals, use, sharpen, repair tools. Fix flats and set deep well pumps. We had opportunity to learn a lot of things that a young man today does not have access too.
Several of the mentioned, ag and dairy, even helper on a T/T route will expose him to some knowledge and first hand experience. Who knows, lots of time something happens, and when the smoke settles they look around to see who is still there and able/available.
