That’s assuming that he can drive a truck.

Too many are looking at this as a cure for financial stress but it has caused this mess we have to deal with by having bad or crap drivers.

To the OP, we are not blind or dumb, many of us have been in this a long time and know the trends and reality of it. The worst driver is one who doesn’t know how to drive, it is just like flying, if you don’t use the license to learn and hone your skills, you become worthless in a commercial venture. I know a couple commerical pilots, that is their life, this is all they do outside of a hobby to keep them grounded. Truck driving is the same thing but here we are not considered professionals because of the system that drives the revolving door of employment, we end up with drivers who can’t even park in a pull through spot.

If you go and look up the program, there is not income requirement for the program. Anyone who’s an Alabama resident can take the course for free under Skills for success

You say that you hope to drive a bus. You do know that to have the Passenger bus endorsement, that you have to take your skills test in a bus. And if you do that, the CDL will be only for the bus. Does that school have a bus for you to test in.

    My apologies.
My interwebb search yesterday said it had income qualifications..This morning it said what you are claiming..no income limits.

Do you get veterans benefits coming out of the reserves? If so you could get free training from a better program. The program you’re thinking of is kind of inadequate for real world trucking. Unless you’re just thinking to drive a loser cruiser (public transportation) bus then go for it.

For actually driving with the big dogs that training program is a pizza-chip. It really just designed to give ex cons and people living in the gutter a leg up.

It’s free, I get it but, you really get what you pay for.

Nope, they don’t. But the local coach company said they’d hire me and get me the passenger endorsement. You can drive a bus with a class A CDL.

I’m not taking time off work or even quitting my job to go to a company that trains or one of the 4 week CDL schools just for a license that I’ll likely never use. After everything I’ve read here, I’m probably not going to do it anyway. Y’all keep saying it would be a waste of my time, no one would hire me, and not to do it, so my question has been answered. If anything, I’ll get the class B, and drive a dump truck for my brother’s construction company on the side. Thanks for the help

please LISTEN to the advice given about you holding off....there may or there may not be any part time work available for a newbie driver.....if you do not obtain a job right away, nearly all companies require schooling all over again.

good luck, so many here are saying what i would have said regarding your so-called back up plan

He's not looking to change careers to drive trucks.
He's looking for a backup plan in case something happens to his current job.
He has a good plan and may never need it, but at least he's thinking ahead.
Don't read so much, that isn't there, into his post.

You can drive a bus with a class A CDL ONLY AFTER YOU GET THE P ENDORSEMENT. Walking around with a CDL in your pocket doesn't protect your income unless you ALWAYS have a job waiting for you and you keep getting your DOT medical exam renewed every 2 years or less.

I don't think you understand the difference between 10,000 media stories about a TRUCK DRIVER SHORTAGE that doesn't exist and the reality working drivers are telling you about the industry they work in.

There is no truck driver shortage. There is a shortage of people willing to work for low-pay, be away from family, and fight for a parking spot every night away from home. You are either in or out of trucking.

You’ve made your point clear a few posts up. I don’t need to explain to me what will or won’t protect my income. Thanks for your opinion.
