Hello everyone, I hope everyone is doing well! I have two questions, what gear do I need to be in when making a left or right turn in a manual 10 speed? 5th gear and is that the same as off ramp high way? The second question is let’s say I am driving in 8th gear and I red light comes up and I use the service break but the light turn green while the truck is rolling at 3-15 miles per hour but let’s say it’s really low and barley moving like 3-5 miles per hour in that situation how do I do? Do I put it in 4th gear? So it’s already in 8th gear so what I would do is natural T selector down clutch 4th gear? And doesn’t have to be a red light it could be a car that I was waiting for to move and it moved while I barley going 2-5 miles per hour. Thank you everyone for your help!
Myself I just put it in whatever gear is needed to maintain a reasonable RPM for the speed I need to be at for the curve or corner. When I pull up towards a stop light I'm already gearing down to keep the engine from lugging below 1000-1200 RPM or so. I usually just keep downshifting until I'm on the low side. If the light changes I can just give it fuel and start grabbing gears or I'll just idle up in one of the gears on the low side. If I have to stop I just put it in 1st or 2nd once stopped and then take off when it's green.
You use the gear that lets you pull the trailer when making left or right turn. You’re going to be watching the trailer and cars and everything so you will be going slow. If don’t pull the trailer in the winter on snow and ice the trailer will push your tractor out of the way and you can jackknife. So in the summer you also use the gear that you pull the trailer just like in winter.
Downshift all the way to the stoplight, using the jakes to slow you down. This will keep you rolling and in gear... You will only need the service brakes if you are coming all the way to a stop... The only exception is if the light turns right in front of you and u got to stop in a hurry.. in that situation you should brake all the way and as u come to a stop u can slip out of whatever gear youre in and get it into 1st or 2nd..otherwise theres no reason to abuse your brakes when you can let the engine do the work of slowing you down. The jakes on these new trucks are so powerful i can hit most exit ramps without ever touching the brakes until i come to a complete stop at the stop sign The gear to be in around a turn depends entirely on the turn. Sometimes i can use the mystery gear, other times i got to drop to 5th or 4th or 3rd. Take each turn as it comes, also dont be afraid to split lanes and create more room for yourself to swing wide. Better to take it and not need it than to get halfway thru your turn and realize you need more room.
@omar1999 Notice in all the responses, no one is giving you a specific gear? Do you know why? Because there are different variables that would factor in 1. Rear end gear ratio. A 4:10 gear ratio would require a completely different gear than a 3:36 2. Gross vehicle weight 3. Terrain. Uphill, downhill, flat ground. Combined with the GVW, you have completely different needs. Sounds complicated, but it’s not. Tell you what, let’s make it easy. Loaded, highest gear on the low side of the transmission. Empty, lowest gear on the high side of the transmission. If the truck starts bucking, downshift 1 gear. If the engine rpm’s go way up and the engine braking feels like it wants to slow you down, you’re in too low of a gear. Upshift one gear.
