Had some. FIL in Memphis died and wife was in a nursing home down here. She drifted down in a year or so and never realized she was not in Memphis, just knew she had "moved".
My sister; 5 years older than me, was in the skilled nursing assistance here (The Greenhouses). Had broken a hip and started going down. Still ate, fed herself, and sat watching TV seemingly with it. Her daughter and SIL would come down from KY to visit. She knew Carol was her daughter, but could not call her name until you told her the first letter. She wanted to know who was the man (SIL) with her. I visited her each week (same campus here) and was puzzled. She would brighten and smile and move when I would come in the day room where they sat, and we could talk and she respond in general terms. Sort of a Yeah, Good, as I mentioned other siblings. I had the feeling I was that nice man who came over there to see her each week. She passed away about 2 years ago in her normal sleep.
My brother, 2 years younger than me (87) is in a facility in Alex City, AL In the last 18 months, he has gone from using a walker, conversing current subjects and using a bathroom. To bedfast, has to be fed, is belligerent aggressive to the nurses, knows his son "Mike" who come each Saturday as :"Mike", but does not know/recognize/aware that Mike is his youngest son. Who has been living with him and caring for him the last 3 years.
Me, I will be 90 Sept 3rd. I do not think my memory is bad, for my age. My typing is hampered by my arthritic and swollen/fat fingers hitting more than one key. The girls do not seem to be concerned. I can sit and describe things back 50 years, fairly accurate, but cannot remember the name of some one who dropped in from my church. Tho in fairness, I had never seen him before as I stream the services. Pastor who will preach my funeral dropped in last week, We had a good chat and covered some details of my wishes the girls and I had made. He preached Peggy's funeral and is knowledgeable of our family history in the church.
I know my thought process are not as sharp, but I still get in bed, get up at 6, bathe, dress, wrangle my socks on (stiff knees/big belly).
Control my toilet functions in spite of heavy Lasix for legs swelling. Eat more than I should and read a Kindle; like a castaway would.
What you are asking. Yes, dementia sets in on older folks. It varies with the temperament/range of activities the person had.
Quiet introverts seem to just get overall slower/quieter. Extroverts seem to accelerate some things, resist instruction discipline.
It seems to start with difficult remembering names, then dates of events, then people, places. Just has a steady progression.
A textbook case is one comes into a retirement facility, adjust, slows down to level of cohorts. Gets sick or falls. Hospitalized. Seem to become disoriented leaving there and returning. Changes in personal care habits from injury/recovery seem to accelerate the decline.
Actually, it seems from observation around here since 2016, the onset of more assistance seem to make things worse, like there is no reason to do since you can't and they won't let you. Example..
A person is in their wheelchair and stopped in the hall. You walking to lunch start to push them. A no no, elder don't push elder, Aide will do it.
A person wheels out of their room on their scooter, whacks a right, Too short, takes a tumble. Clambers to get up. You do not help. Nurse must.
I was called by 2 little old ladies the first week in the wing I was in. Older lady has slipped out of her chair. Roger, come help her back in. We do not want the office to know... So I amble down. She 98 had lunged forward in her chair to respond to something, and just slid right out and sat down in front. She looks up like caught stealing cookies and said. Help me up, I just slid out. So I had her move arms, legs, twist head, no blood. Caught under her arms and picked up her 90 lbs level and slid her back in. I was the hero. If of record, she would be watched and monitored to see if she was a risk. IT IS GOOD POLICY, AND PROTECTS SOME LEGAL EXPOSURE, BUT SOMETIMES CARRIED TO EXTREME..exhausted379, austinmike, homeskillet and 7 others Thank this. -
