I've been looking into getting it expunged. It was so old I just didn't think it would be an issue. They haven't denied him, we just haven't heard back.

Thank you guys for the help!

I don't think Windy Hill runs to West Coast.

Broader Felony & Misdemeanor Relief (14 States)

These states offer comprehensive authority to expunge, seal, or set aside most non-violent felony convictions, including many drug offenses, often with shorter waiting periods (e.g., 3–7 years) and fewer restrictions. Drug felonies like possession typically qualify if non-violent; some have automatic processes for marijuana.

    • Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Washington

Limited Felony & Misdemeanor Relief (23 States)

These states provide restricted relief for non-violent felonies, including some drug convictions, but with longer waiting periods (e.g., 5–10 years), petition requirements, or limits (e.g., first offenses only). Marijuana reforms have broadened access in several.

    • California, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming

Misdemeanors & Pardoned Felonies (5 States)

Relief is limited to misdemeanors or felonies only after a pardon; felony drug convictions may qualify post-pardon but lack direct expungement paths. Some have narrow drug-specific exceptions.

    • Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas

    Misdemeanor Relief (3 States + D.C.)

These jurisdictions offer relief primarily for misdemeanors; felony drug convictions are generally ineligible, though some allow reduction of low-level drug felonies to misdemeanors for eligibility.

    • Iowa, Montana, South Carolina, District of Columbia

No General Sealing or Set-Aside (5 States + Federal)

No statutory authority for expunging or sealing adult felony convictions, including drugs; alternatives like deferred adjudication may exist but don’t seal records. Federal law has narrow exceptions for youthful misdemeanor drug possession.

Alaska, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Wisconsin, Federal

Key Provisions and Reforms for Felony Drug Convictions

Drug felonies are often eligible in the above categories if non-violent, with waiting periods and rehabilitation proof required. Post-2018 reforms emphasize marijuana decriminalization, leading to retroactive relief in many states. Automatic processes (no petition needed) are available in ~17 states for certain drug offenses, especially marijuana possession or distribution now decriminalized.

Marijuana-Specific Relief (Often Automatic or Retroactive): Arizona (expungement for certain possession/cultivation since 2021); California (automatic sealing for decriminalized offenses since 2018, including felonies); Connecticut (automatic erasure for some post-2000 felonies since 2023); Illinois (automatic or petition-based for minor cannabis felonies since 2019); New Jersey (automatic sealing/expungement for range of offenses); New Mexico (automatic for no-longer-criminal acts since 2021); New York (automatic expungement since 2021); Vermont (immediate eligibility for decriminalized conduct); Virginia (automatic for misdemeanors, effective 2025; felonies petition-based).

Other Drug Felony Provisions: Colorado (reduction to misdemeanors for minor drug felonies, then sealing); Montana (petition for expungement/resentencing for legalized marijuana acts since 2021); Pennsylvania (automatic “clean slate” sealing for single less-serious drug felonies after 10 years).

Trends: Automatic relief is expanding (e.g., Michigan’s 2021 law for up to two felonies; Utah’s 2020 clean slate for certain offenses), but harder-drug felonies (e.g., distribution) face more barriers than marijuana. For state-specific details, refer to individual CCRC profiles.

I just stumbled onto Cooke trucking out of Mount Airy, NC. They also run teams and consider felons. I will absolutely update. I searched before posting, found several "felony" threads, but none with convictions that old. Hopefully this will turn into useful info for someone else in the future.

His conviction was in Oklahoma. Man, you're a wealth of appreciated knowledge! I gotta get a few hours of sleep in, but, I'll be initiating this process as soon as my feet hit the floor tomorrow!

Ah, don't be so sure, I'm sure that mishap is logged in the Pentagon somewhere,,,in the back, get this, my friend got a positive on a random, went through all the BS, got cleared, the DOT told her in 5 years it would be removed from her record. EIGHT YEARS LATER, the Dot came in and said we are retesting ANYONE that may have had a positive, ever. 30 years is a long time, before the internet, so it may not show up, above all, tell him to keep his mouth shut! :p Best of luck, I think he'll be fine.

What happened to the usual advice? Only answer what is asked. If asked have you been oonvicted in the last 10 years the answer is no. If asked have you ever in your lifetime been convicted the answer is yes.
