Let me start by saying I have the utmost respect for truckers. My father drove cross country for many years. His stories of the road used to entertain me for hours.

I recently took a job as a commercial lines insurance producer. I focus on writing new business for our agency. We are in an area where logging is huge, also we are at a major crossroads in the middle of the state.

I am a hard working young man from a blue collar family. I have been working since I was 12 years old. I am one of the first in my family to hold a position like this.

    My question is as follows:

1)How can I approach you guys, given your long hours and busy schedule, without being "that guy"?

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you wanting to sell insurance or something?

I'm guessing that he wants to open up some new insurance business with truckers, loggers and log truckers through cold calling and, still keep his teeth (j/k).

I'd suggest a billboard at the crossroads.

Basically I am a new agent.. I work for an established agency and I am wanting to get my name out there.. Like I said I come from a blue collar family so I see it from your point of view more than the agent view. The last thing it seems I would want is some guy coming up to me when I am at the pump and pitching sales.

Teeth I am not worried about, but it is crucial to my success that I make a good name for myself.

I am glad your thinking of how to grow your business. The tough part is as you know: how do you aproach your customers? Anyone trying to sell me anything in a truck stop is highly suspect. Can you rent inside space? That might help.

Yea, catching us at the pump's... Not such a hot idea. One thing I can say is that you can pass up any company truck and go for the O/O's if you have something that will brighten their day and make thing's easier like a better insurance program for cheaper giving the big guy's a run for their money.

print some cards or flyers and post them on the bulletin board or around the pay phones in the truck stops. Or the drivers lounge. If you have a flyer or a pamphlet then that would be ok to give out at the fuel island. You would probably get farther with that then trying to talk with a driver when they are fueling because we have very tight schedules and fueling is always hectic because we have to fuel, get our fuel ticket, grab a sandwich and get back on the road. You could also approach drivers who are parked as long as you can see them sitting in the seat. Just make sure you don't look like a Jehovah's Witness or some one who wants to bum money. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Judging by how many empty ones I see lately, check billboard rates.
They seem to be low on the marketing totem pole.

Something catchy might appeal, personally I like funny ones.

Like, how about somthing lampooning those "have you been injured by a truck driver?" Ambulance Chasing Lawyer signs.

(and now Infosaur will shoot himself in the foot by giving out an idea he could probably charge for.)

"Have you been injured in a courtroom? Greedy lawyers cutting you off while texting only to turn around and sue? Has the government picked your pocket clean? Call 1-800 Truk-Ins! We represent the best of the best commercial professional! We're open 14 hours a day 70 hours a week! And we sleep in our cubicles! Let us represent YOU!"

Offer not valid in Hawai, may cause baldness, hope and change lasting more than 4 years may indicate a problem, seek medical assistence, I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove anything.

You could spread that out across multiple billboards like the old Burma Shave signs.
