Hello! I just passed my CDL A test last week and am looking to make a final decision on what company to work for. Obviously, my choices are limited due to experience. I recently moved to the Lynchburg, VA area. I am looking to wind things down after over 30 years of business ownership. Good driving record and no drug use or other limiting issues. I am open to OTR. If anyone has input on desirable companies to start with, or any other advice on questions I should ask or potential pitfalls, it would be much appreciated. I have looked through this site and frankly, the starter companies I looked up are not highly rated. Maybe I just have to pay my dues and relook at things in a year?

Advice:
Avoid companies that train in a team driving situation.
Avoid getting suckered into Dollar Store deliveries.
Avoid companies from the Chicagoland area and also companies that pay by 1099.
Avoid companies that want you to lease a truck from them. Do not ever lease a truck from a trucking company.Concorde, Ddh77777, Walk Among Us and 10 others Thank this. -
You being in VA, look at Abilene Motor Express. They restarted their training program and pay decent.Concorde and Rideandrepair Thank this.

Abilene is under the Knight Transportation umbrella. I worked at Knight for 18 mos. many years ago. They were decent then. Lots of short to medium length loads.Concorde and Rideandrepair Thank this.
-
Sucks Knight swallowed them also....but medium size company in his backyard.
Personally....Knight/Swifty can kiss it on my end.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Funny you should mention them. I talked with the owner of a small trucking company, for my application, he linked me with Abilene. I suspect he contracts with them? Anyway, they made me a conditional offer quite different from his. Before I hit him up with a ton of questions, I wanted to check further into available opportunities. First, as a past business owner, I realize his time is valuable and it will take him time to prepare his answers. Second, he provides no benefits and he operates 1.5 hours away from where I live.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Google the Following Companies -
- Houff Transfer - Weyers Cave VA
- Howells Motor Freight - Roanoke
- Fleetmaster Express - Roanoke
- Englander Transportation - Rustburg
Rideandrepair and DJB25 Thank this. -

Rideandrepair and snowmantrucking101 Thank this.
