My grandpa did the same with tractors. Tryin to run the mower through red clover and thick johnson grass with a 90 horse tractor at 1500. He'd ball up that red clover in the mower so bad it would take an hour to clean. It would kill the tractor.
I never could make him understand how hard he was working the engine, "to save fuel" you bet Papaw, then he'd still have to mow it again.
I ran a 60 horse with an identical mower @2400, and left a clean field in one round.
