I wound up doing both. Took 40 Raleigh out to Dallas. On the way back took 20 to 85 to 40. On the way back, i hit bad accident traffic on 85 in south carolina. So that skewed the results in favor of the 40 route. But take piece of data out that out and I think the 2 routes are fairly the same or not THAT dramatically different. Atlanta traffic was a little worse (by 30 - 60 min) than the Appalachian Gorge traffic on 40... so if I had to do it again, I would take 40 from raleigh to dallas.

I do a lot of pulling out of Greensboro and Charlotte to Dallas.

Being heavy as a tanker running I-20 is cheaper. You just have to "time" going through Atlanta at night. I-20 corridor will have cheaper diesel by about .20c/gallon, and less hills to pull. You also miss all the drama through nash, knox, memphis, little rock. <ileage is more, but overall it is cheaper to run that way when heavy.

FWIW, I run nights as much as possible. I'll load in the morning and shutdown, and start at 8pm and sleep during the day on that run. You'all can play bumper cars during the day while I sleep in the truckstop.

    JMon and ncmickey Thank this.
