While the US government has not officially called a "Recession" lest there be panic by the masses, there is no doubt that the trucking industry is doing it tough with some notable carriers filing for bankruptcy and its not just the transport industry between January 2025 - September 2025 up to 69 US based companies have filed under chapter 11. including famous brand names such as Burger King, Hooters, Tricolor Holdings, Primalend, LTI Trucking, Davis Express, Best Logistics, C& C Freight Network, Best Choice Trucking LLC, Balkan Express, KPower Global Logistics, AZA Transportation, NAS Logistics LLC, Nortia Logistics Inc.
As a result with a decline in driver demand will have a flow on affect on driver pay, just as a demand for a commodity pushes prices higher so to a shortage of drivers will often force companies to pay above award rates to lure drivers across to drive for them, an oversupply and under demand for freight would naturally cause the opposite affect. While $0.52 may not be ideal it may be all that's on offer however the choice is still yours, if you can find a company that will pay a lot more then all the better for you under the current economic climate that may not be the case though. -

I got almost 18 years driving and clean cvor and I can’t get any calls back. It’s a sh$t market right now . if the op husband does live in Oshawa which is only 20-30 min from Toronto. it’s way over saturated in toronto area where you’re competing against both experienced drivers looking for better opportunities which there’s only a few of and the boat loads of new immigrants who lie and scam their way into getting jobs .
I checked Gardewine too because you mentioned them they’re only hiring in northern city’s like thunder bay , North bay and sudbury right now . they use lots of owner ops here in the gta -
I don’t know if you’re close, but try Xpo. Up over .80 a mile. Lots of bs, but good pay.
