Thanks but you really didn’t say anything. If you don’t know it’s ok to say you don’t know. How about the fmcsa saying dot numbers can not be sold or transferred they are assigned to 1 person forever. The dangerous thing about the internet is you get a story from someone you have no idea who they are and can make all kinds of comments that aren’t true. With just a little research you can find the truth. The numbers aren’t worth anything the only value in buying a established company is if contracted customers that come along with a sale of the trucking company and the value of equipment and real estate the company owns. I understand some thing they are so smart they think they can outsmart insurance companies and brokers but thinking you can sell dot numbers isn’t going to work so back to square one figure out a different way to try to scam them. But believing you can sell your dot number I personally don’t believe you’re smart enough
Buying and already active MC# and US dot?

OK, I thought you were smarter than that. I thought you knew about this.
This takes a little time; it is not illegal as long as you are not trying to side-step any of the intent of the regulation.
If the dot numbers are in your name, then you create a company and go through the lateral move to put it under the company name. You can do this without affecting your numbers or status. Recommended to everyone who owns one in their own name any way.
The FMCSA allows this lateral move with some restrictions. One restriction is that you can't change the company or controlling officers within 30 days, which triggers revocation or deactivation.
What takes time is making it ripe, so as to allow transfer to another controlling officer (Owner) of the company, as long as you are not trying to side-step the intent of the regulation.
When you go to sell the company, say in at least 18 months, you will most likely not face an audit or revocation. Your biannual update would be accepted without any triggering or questioning.
You can also change the officer of the company for a bunch of reasons, death of the officer is one, another is becoming incapable of controlling the company, are just two. But this has to have lawyers involved.
The FMCSA can not prevent you from selling the company or changing it after it becomes ripe; they view the company as the controlling entity after a time has passed. Again, it is what you are not trying to do, step around the intent of the regulation.
Now you all can call this bullsh****, but it has been used for years, it is legal, and it is something that takes time to do.
That said, I would never put the DOT numbers in my own name or the authority, always in a company name that allows it to be transferred to another entity.Oxbow and Accidental Trucker Thank this. -
Man you spent a lot of time on this.Your just talking gibberish you’re wrong again.A dot number cannot be transferred period. I see you fell for the person statement I made without still doing any research. The fmcsa states person or entity (Corp) only the original owner of the dot number can keep that number your dot number is tied to your ss or ein number I doubt that you have one since you obviously don’t understand that and it always will be.if the company is sold to a new entity or person that new owner would be required to apply for a new dot number. I know there are some you can tell them a stop sign is red and they will say No it’s blue. Why is this hard for you it’s clear English direct from fmcsa own rules they CANNOT be sold or TRANSFERRED they are given to one person or entity FOREVER.Last edited: Dec 12, 2025

Geez, you are not transferring the DOT number, you are selling all the shares of a corporation (a legal “person”) with a DOT number.
Oxbow Thanks this. -

Show where you can sell a dot number as you just stated where the fmcsa says you can sell the dot number.Selling shares of a corporation has nothing to do with a dot number.Yes you can sell a corporation but the new enitiy would be responsible for there own dot number.Again the fmcsa states In very plain English dot numbers cannot be sold or transferred .Either you can’t understand English or you’re trying to scam people.

A C-Corp is an entity in itself. Purchasing the stock doesn't change the entity, TIN#, anything associated with it.Oxbow and Accidental Trucker Thank this.

. What are you talking about what does buying stock have to do with anything who here is selling stocks?..I know you truck stop attorneys have at very least google it.And you still can’t understand clear English you CANNOT sell or transfer a dot number It’s assigned to the original owner FOREVER.this is simple and nobody has posted where the fmcsa states a dot number can be sold or transferred. IYou can buy stocks in Disney for all I care.Last edited: Dec 17, 2025

That fact you can't understand what a separate entity(C-Corp)is doesn't change the fact that you are not selling the DOT#

Look this is easy to show if you can sell a incorporated trucking company does the original dot number stay in place so tell where the fmcsa says that. Now there’s been guys trying to use what the fmcsa says a dot number can stay the same in a seamless change but people are just trying to play with words.A seamless change is a sole proprietor changing his business to LLC for example but nothing else in the business changes like addresse or officials So simply show where the fmcsa says a trucking company that is incorporated or not that you can buy and not get a new dot number
