Yes, you need hazmat first. I sent names of fuel companies to apply with.

I'll give tsa another call. Its been over 30 days since I've applied for that background check. Whats weird is that TWIC came in the mail faster. is this normal?

If you passed the TWIC check then you unofficially passed the HazMat check, you just haven't been notified yet. They use the same check for both. Once you get your letter from TSA go finish the rest at the driver license office.

As a fuel hauler -- my answer here is a firm, "no."

The competition for those home daily jobs is currently pretty fierce -- especially with the private fleets.

You are competing with other drivers who already have respectable levels of fuel hauling experience -- along with the requisite safety records to match.

You will likely have better success within the food service sector:
    • McLane
    • Sysco
    • Core-mark
    • Performance Food Group
    • Ben E Keith
    • & others

Get out and go to them, dont apply online except fot OTR. Local you ned to knock on doors, go to the readymix plant, take the mixer job, at least that will count, let them know that yor interested in bottom dumps, and tankers. Your TWICS card is invaluable overall. Kansas. Tought time of year in your location, Also go to the local friehgt companies, but go there don't call them. The guy that walks in will get hired over you if you applied online. Call the recruiters. not thru indeed, but the phone, youll get more info than you can get on indeed.
Indeed is not a bad tool, but it is only a tool. Knock knock, ring ring, and shoe leather will get you more. Also try Marketplace and Craigslist. Try it all.

Oh it's definitely not more local jobs than OTR. This thread wouldn't even exist if that were the case. I think there are more local jobs in certain areas of the country than others, but overall, I'd say no. You'll never find a shortage of drivers wanting local or regional, but you’ll always have a huge demand for OTR drivers.

Now the 2nd part of your post about the warehouses, I think you're on to something since OP is in Wichita, maybe he can take a drive down to that Dillon's in Goddard and see what they can do for him. To get a job under the Kroger umbrella would be nice, but I also think Firstfleet runs in and out of there too so that's something to think about.

First Fleet is for the most part REGIONAL. There’s are more smaller fleet trucks on the road than there are megas. Most noobs are too lazy to look. That doesn’t mean that these jobs aren’t there. I started off local. My first two jobs were local, the next 2 regional. I got my little sister a local job the exact same way I started, by taking a warehouse job. She started 12 years ago and I am at almost 40. Same results.

The people who think the megas are the majority and rookies can’t start local are too lazy to search and prefer to drink the mega carrier koolaid.

I don't necessarily think that a rookie has to take the mega route. I don't agree that local jobs are all that plentiful. How many drivers do you think are needed to do local work? Lol. Just about every driver wants local work, and it ain't like drivers quit local jobs, especially good ones all that quick. Also, location is key.
