    Hey Guys and Merry Christmas!

    I got a 1999 Freightshaker Century 12.7 S60.

    Recent work includes:
new injectors and injector harness, new ECM

However, I had an ECM update recently to remove a "Reward for Mileage efficiency" software update. Now I can go 75 mph all the time.

Problem is: the jake brake comes on lightly when starting out from a stop in 3rd gear. Any ideas what could be wrong? Overhead maybe?

Thank you for any help you can give. Have a great Christmas and New Year.

Years ago, when you heard some guy shifting gears with the Jake on, you would chuckle and probably mutter "what an idiot" to yourself. So, I guess software is the idiot now?

Start with the simple things. Recheck the valve set. Then run it with the rocker cover off to see if a solenoid is partially stuck open allowing partial brake activation.

When did this start? Right after the program or after the other work?

I assume this truck is a standard transmission? Are you 100% sure you're hearing the jake? How does it affect it while running? And you mention it only does it in 3rd gear? Does it matter what position the jake switch is in?

Will do, that sounds like a good starting spot. Thank you.

Yes standard trans, and started right after "software update", NOT after new injector harness, injectors and ECM. I do have a bad hole in muffler by corner of sleeper driverside. The jakes sound like they come on for 1 second but not enough to pull me down in speed, just a jake noise. Fuel economy has not changed. Jake switch is off totally. Thank you BRS for the help.

I'm not saying it's not the jake, but I have my doubts. Any chance worn motor mounts are causing some contact when the engine is under torque?

If the Jake was coming on under power you would have white smoke no if ands or buts to that. The reason they don’t cause white smoke when used normal is the fuel is at its lowest limit. The ECM turns the fuel off and on under normal conditions and if it was in the ECM you would feel it loose steam. Now if you had a solenoid sticking causing this then the fuel would not be limited by the ECM thus causing the white smoke.

I’m not saying the ECM update isn’t an issue but no way it’s in the Jake’s unless you suffer from one of the 2 conditions I’ve outlined above

OK now that you mention it, I have noticed a "movement/vibration" at my feet on the floor. Thought it was a worn shakle, but I will check the motor mounts tomorrow too. You may be right that the noise is the rusted muffler moving sounds like the jakes. Thanks for the ideas, gonna check it out tomorrow.

OK great insight, I will look for a white puff of exhaust next time I hear it. I'm gonna pull the stack/muffler also to make sure the rusted out grinding isn't the "pseudo-jake sound". I appreciate the advice.
