A week ago after a 10 hour break in Illinois I started my truck and it began making a loud puttering/ticking sound.
I drove home about 700 miles no issue and called my mechanic he was nonchalant about the issue and told me to it might be time for a new truck.
I went to get a second opinion and this mechanic said I need a new cylinder head and the job will be around $12k
Are they just lazy mechanics and should I just tear the engine down and find the issue myself? I'm tired of over paying mechanics when I'm capable of doing 90% of the work myself.
Has anyone experienced this similar issue before? How long did you drive it before getting it fixed?

Sure you can tear it down yourself , but its not gonna be any cheaper, and will take you longer than a professional wrench...
It is impossible to diagnose any problems without knowing any symptoms you are having. Its like going to the doctor and telling them you dont feel good and asking them if you need a heart transplant...lets start somewhere more simple, what symptoms does your truck have ?Oxbow, blairandgretchen, Diesel Dave and 2 others Thank this. -
Trying to diagnose a noise without hearing it is impossible.
Dd15’s are known for wearing exhaust valves if you don’t keep the overhead adjusted.Oxbow, D.Tibbitt and DriverHaze Thank this. -
I have a ticking sound when I crank/idle. On a cold start if I idle, exhaust will seep into the cab. When engine is warm or driving all these indications go away but when I accelerate I get a hissing sound.D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

And I may not be as fast as a certified mechanic but I am my father's son.

Can you take a video of these sounds and post it here.. exhaust seeping into cab is an exhaust leak. You should find the leak before it kills you.DriverHaze and Diesel Dave Thank this.

So watch a YT video on adjusting the overhead and see what you find.
If you pull the overhead first, put a straight edge across the valves to see if one is higher.
Sounds like you have a valve open on startupD.Tibbitt, Oxbow, Diesel Dave and 1 other person Thank this. -
Time 2. Sounds like some kind of exhaust leak. Like it’s just starting out. OR……. The valves(exhaust side) are to tight and it’s reversing thru the intake air filter, that’s where your getting the sound. It happened on my 3406 E CAT. Hope I explained that correctly to the OP.D.Tibbitt, Oxbow and DriverHaze Thank this.

We will see. When I stop im going to run some cylinder cut out tests and check out my valves. Mechanic did say it could be a bent valve.D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

If you have diagnostic link there is a test that I think is called mechanical compression test. It should let you know if you have a cylinder down.
The hiss on acceleration could be a boost leak, egr pipe or cracked bellows.Big Road Skateboard, D.Tibbitt and Oxbow Thank this.
