So it appears that I’ve been doing it wrong for years.. always prefilled before screwing it on. Same with my oil filter..
Cummins recommends installing it dry..any thoughts on doing it this way? Sure would make my life easier since these filters on my 2023 is about four inches taller and heavier than my 2021. Full of fuel and the fine threads can be a beach sometime.
Just stumbled across it while doing a little research on changing my first power steering fluid filter..guess I should have been doing this one every PM..instead of after 400k.
Still living and learning..
Started doing everything myself after the third oil filter coming loose and leaking oil. Techs were only putting them on hand tight my guess.

I’ll tell you how I do it not saying I do it right. I pull that cover off the compucheck fitting I circled in above photo. I have a fitting a 3ft hose and ball valve put together. Hook your hose up and turn key on so electric pump runs. Open your ball valve pointed into catch container of your choice. When the air is out of your hose the filter is bled and she’s ready to run. Remove your bleed hose and reinstall dust cover, with the longer filter I also remove the 8mm bolt and move oil dipstick to make install easier.D.Tibbitt, Concorde and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -
If you pre fill the engine filter, leave the plastic plug in the center of the filter when pre filling. Remove the plug right before you install. This forces the fuel to flow thru the filter first.
Bugger is heavy tho with a gallon of fuel in it and they arnt the easiest to start.
You can also cycle the key until the return fuel becomes clear of bubbles in the tank. Don’t crank it until all the bubbles are gone.
@wore out has given you the Cummins procedure for removing air from the engine side.D.Tibbitt, Concorde, wore out and 1 other person Thank this. -
Nice, was always curious about what that was under the dust cover.
Glad I asked now, thanks!D.Tibbitt, Big Road Skateboard and wore out Thank this. -
Yep, always prefilled it with the plug in then removed before installing.. Always did the Davco filter at the same time and would fill the Davco with fuel to the top and cycle the key several times. Once the fuel stopped dropping in the Davco I’d start the engine. Always started right up.
Just too darn heavy for me now trying to put the filter on full of fuel and. Then if the fuel gets on your hands it becomes extremely difficult.Big Road Skateboard and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Most liekly just a way to prevent contaminants getting into the fuel system... Cummins makes it easy to prime just switching the key on and off 4 or 5 times
Concorde and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -
Do the ISX 15 have the same set up ? I’ve been pre filling my filter then installing it, yes, it can be a ##### to install.
