It's funny a company "recommends" you do this service every 6 month's, and they just happen to have the supplies you need.....

First time this has been mentioned. Typical engineering design change to something rock solid to make something cheaper. It ultimately makes it weaker. Then knowing it will become worn out and sloppy long before it should and a warranty issue, they come up with this pm bs to pass the buck to the user.

I can almost guarantee nobody does this every 6 months. Sounds like an over reaction by TRW to avoid any future lawsuits blaming a binding spline shaft. Unless it’s leaking, I’d leave it alone. Maybe pack a bit of grease under the boot. That’s just me. Maybe I’m wrong. Definitely be watching it closely, after reading all that.

Can those steering shaft u-joints be replaced or would it be a better idea just replace the whole assembly on a truck with 1m+ miles? Looks like there is a slip yoke in the middle also. Top u-joint nearest the firewall is starting to click a little when rotating the shaft by hand. Can also hear it when rocking the wheel back and forth.

If the slip yoke is good, replace the U joints. They're 20$ or so.

TRW, Ross, & Sheppard are 3 of the manufacturers of steering boxes on these trucks. Sheppard was the first owner of my W900L, they ordered it brand new in glider form….
