Here’s some out of the box thinking: Get a job as a school bus driver. I started my CDL career as a school bus driver back in 1999 in Fort Collins, Colorado, because I had burned out on my career as a craft brewer and just needed a subsistence level job to keep a roof over my head and food on the table.

I drove school buses for three years before transitioning over to charter coach buses, which I drove for several years. I returned to school bus driving when I moved to Austin, Texas in 2012, driving for Lake Travis ISD for a couple of years, then went back to charter work until I got my CDL-A and started driving trucks in 2019.

As an only source of income, school bus driving is pretty weak, but as a supplemental income, it’s a pretty sweet gig. The average driver works a split shift, three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon. Summers off, fall and spring breaks, long Christmas break. Depending on whether you’re working for a contractor or directly for a school district (my preference), you’ll probably have good health coverage.

I’m probably going to drive a truck for nine more years (I’ll be 75), and then will be (hopefully) drawing Social Security and from my 401k, and depending on how much that will actually support us, I can definitely see going back to doing it again.
