I was reading the posts here today, like most other days, and was wondering something. Are there any drivers who didn't go to school? I haven't been driving for as long as some people who post but it seems everybody attended a school. I became a driver by default, I have friends who own trucks and every so often I would take a load for them (no CDL) It became more frequent so I decided to get my license. After that it became more and more regular and now it's turned into a job. A job that I enjoy and always have but my real question is.. Are there people who learned the business without a school?

that's what I'm saying, on the job training is the best you can get. No classroom can simulate situations where your lost, it's snowing, the road is too narrow and you have no computer/cell phone service. I just noticed a lot of the posts I read were people talking about their school.

If you have someone with a truck that is willing to teach you, you don't need to go to school to get your license...
....HOWEVER....
Insurance companies like to see "experience"...lower perceived risk. Some insurance companies allow an approved school in lieu of experience.
If you don't do the school thing, you have to find a company that can insure you until you have the experience.
I almost didn't do the school thing. The towing company I was working for had a semi (1986 Pete) w/ a 53' enclosed car hauler trailer, as well as a medium/heavy duty wrecker. I had my permit and was in the process of being trained when the company was sold. So, I ended up doing the school thing instead. -
I know what you're saying, I basically did what you were gonna do until the sale. I guess maybe the friends I drove for didn't put me on the insurance or something because the first time I was ever asked was about 3 years ago and by that time I'd had my CDL for 3 years and had been driving for about 5. Like I said, it happened on accident but turned into something I enjoy and feel that I am good at. I would like to say that if all truckers were like the people I started with the interstate would be a 65 mph vacation. All the truckers I grew up around were real top notch people

No school for me.
I have two friends that own trucks. I am certain they never reported their training activities to their insurance companies.
And getting that valuable first year or two of experience can be a challenge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
My first time around was on the job training. Just after high school. A friends parents owned a small trucking company and I was sort of the "hang around" one thing led to another and they signed off for me with the DMV (back in the stone age you could do that) and I used to take trucks to the local plants to pre-load for the drivers.
Fast forward - let the license go, regretted it and went to a little local b.s. school for a refresher.
so...... I guess I've done it both ways.

That's a fact. When they finally did ask for my info about experience I couldn't say "well I drove for a couple years with no license then wasn't reported on insurance for a while". Just said I drove local and I haven't hit anything so help me out please
