What if.......the ONLY cash register that's open where you can pay for your 2 gallon mega slurpy, 4 hot dogs (2 of which you just ate standing in line), donuts, chips, snakiez, smokes (nope 100's, nope menthol, nope light 100's menthol) lotto tickets, coffee, trinkets found priced 2 for 1 is the fuel island???
More often than naught, that is the way things go.

I think some drivers don't understand that it is O.K. to use the FREE shower you get when you fuel up. Must be super truckers that don't have the time and gotta get back on the road to make that 22 cent a mile

I think it's reasonable to fuel, pull forward, go in, pee, get a pop or a sandwich to go and get your fuel ticket while you're paying for your pop. Should take less than 15 minutes. By that time, the guy behind you in the island is just hanging up the nozzles and you're leaving as he's ready to move forward.
If it's super busy, I don't bother with the pop or sandwich. I just pee and get my fuel ticket. That takes less than 5 minutes on average.
However, if it's slow, there are 5 other pumps open and nobody is behind me, I might walk the dog and eat my lunch right there. But I keep an eye open for someone coming in behind me.
Regarding funky people, I was at a T/A recently at the shop area. This guy came in with a rotten mouth and an eye-wateringly horrid stench around him. I half expected to see the dust cloud like Pigpen from Peanuts. I tried to stand there because I was having a conversation with someone while waiting for my PO number. I ended up moving...out to my truck to get my bottle of cologne, which I sprayed around after the guy left. The guys behind the counter were much happier with my cologne than that. -
People buying lottery tickets is the worst. Luckily, most truck stops don't sell them. They take forever trying to decide which ones to buy and then stand there at the counter scratching them off all the while talking to the cashier.

How about the borderline indigent people buying lottery tickets? Why not have a separate line for transactions over $200?

I worked local hauling gasoline - Some of the drivers showed up for work wearing dirty smelly clothes
