No school here, I went to the DMV and got the book, studied up and got my permit, my buddy O/OP taught me how to drive and I took his truck to the DMV and got my license.
That was a long time ago, Ive returned the favor to a few younger guys helping them get their CDL the same way I did.

I hired a person with a truck to teach me how to pass the test. Got my CDL. Bought a truck, flatbed, got my authority, a book on load securement and started hauling freight 5 years ago. Before that I sat behind a desk all day.
It's not rocket science. -
My first truck was a 1958 international w/a west coast hood, 4x4 trans no air ride seat, cab or suspension. 220 cummins, two speed rear end. it was on the ranch that my family had I fed from it I watered from it slept across the back of the seats when i took the cattle to the feedlot. it had wedge brakes and no jakes. I could go over the grapevine at 3mph.shooting a flame out of the wood stove pipe stack about three feet..........I went to the school of hard knocks. I was 15yrs old. it would get so hot in that truck you could fry an egg on the floor boards. Got out of truck because life thru me a curve ball. Know I cought another curve ball and am getting back to it. but I have to go thru a school so they can teach me how to drive.

No school for me either. Started out driving 2 Macks a 68 and a 71 but they did have 1 stick 5 speeds. Also a 71 IH conv. with a 318 Detroit and a 13 sp.. Hauling grain. No AC, no ps, and floor trailers some of which were converted vans. Them days was different. That IH was 1 ugly truck.

I learned some truck driving in the 60's on the farm. Drove a few trucks in the military in the early 70's. Didn't really get into it until I was living in Alaska after the Army and college. Got on with a small operation. Started with end dumps and worked my way up thru everything they had. Grandfathered into the CDL in '92.

My bro helped me get my cdl. I studied the info he gave me and got my permit, then we both drove all over the place. I then paid a guy to use his truck & trailer for my driving and walk around test.

No school for me.
But, note:
In 2010, Illinois passed a law requiring ~150hrs of an approved training course by a certified instructor.
That basically says "you have to go to school" -
No school for me. Same as several others I know, my original CDL was Grandfathered in......Kentucky required only that I show up by a certain date with the truck and trailer of the time for a road test. After scheduling the test, I showed up and Trooper Beecher, (R.I.P. old friend), looked at me and laughed while signing my road test form, and said now get your arse outta here I know you can drive.

No school for me. Studied the CDL hand book and used a friends truck to do the road test. After geting my cdl friend called me up and asked if i wanted to drive havent looked back ever since.
