I do not currently hold a CDL & have been looking at both private schools & companies that train.
I have the option to attend NETTS(New England Tractor Trailer Training School). Cost of 20 week course is $8900 :-0......about $6000 is approved through student loans & $2600 would be out of pocket. They have a 6 week course that is $3600 up front.
I have also been contacted by Stevens Transport in Dallas & Prime in MO & accepted by both for their student program. I don't get a warm & fuzzy about Steven's $6000 contract with no pro-rating for time served....
I'm leaning towards Prime & would like any input as to whether this is my best option. They have me scheduled for the 1st of June tentatively......My Passport application is being processed so I need to wait for my Birth Cert. to be returned.
I know going to private school may give me more options but I'de rather not wipe out my savings in case I need it to suppliment my income for a while. I appreciate all input. Thanks in advance.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Go to Prime.
You can replace my brother in law.
He managed 2 months of their bologna !!!!!
But Hey,.......Good Luck !!!!!Beechvtail Thanks this. -
Trucking is a lousy business to invest thousands of dollars in right now (and has been for the last 3 years).
You would have better luck buying gold or silver with that money and working at McDonalds.jtrnr1951 Thanks this. -
Been a long time since I looked at any trucking schools, but that NETTS sounds way the heck out of line to me. Have you done some other checking at maybe some applied technology schools? I just hate the idea of becoming an "indentured servant" to ANY company for the schooling.
Good luck. -
Check with your local community colleges. $8900 is absurd.

Look, I know trucking is not the best option for most people right now but I'm forced into a career change. My lifestyle allows me to make the change but due to no experience my options are limited. I either pay for school out of pocket......I'm out of work now & don't want to wipe out my savings...or... get a company to train me. I'm leaning towards Prime as the risk is lower than Stevens & out of pocket expenses are low. I just want any feedback on this option....not sarcasm. I'm trying to make an important decision on my career at almost 48 years old. I have a family member who has been a trucker for 14 years now, he knows me well & feels that this line of work is something I'm suited for. Again, any help is appreciated!

Jester1962, I know what you're saying about needing a career change. I get that. What I (and the others) are saying is don't pay 3 x's the worth of the school. It can be done for less. Also, stay away from Prime. Please read some of the threads concerning them and you will understand why. I got my CDL in 1998 through R.E. West Inc. in Ashland City, TN. I worked for them for a year and left...wish I had stayed. (don't listen to a father-in-law) Went to Gainey on his advice and got screwed. Just don't bury yourself in debt for a career that you're not 100% sure you'll still be with in a year. (Companies close, you wreck, you don't like it, etc.)

You are gambling your future with thousands of dollars up front and NO Guarantees on success whatsoever on the other side.
A casino nearest you may give a better return on your investment.
Please do not heed these words lightly... -
I just turned 48 myself and am undergoing the same career change.
I'm paying $8500 to attend American Institute of Technology (AIT) here in Phoenix. I had people telling me that it was too much and for a while I was wondering the same thing.
However I think I'm getting a lot more thorough training then the $4000 driver mills that rush students in and out the door in a couple of weeks. I had to attend ten weeks (200 Hours) of classroom training BEFORE I got a permit. With that I was able to get my permit and ALL endorsements except bus. Now I'm spending eight weeks (160 Hours) behind the wheel on the road and range. I'm then going to complete a six week externment with Werner to complete my training.
It's not just what you spend on the school, but what you get out of it. And as an employer, I'd be much more likely to hire drivers who recieved the best schooling available.
Are we making a mistake? Maybe. All we can do it go out and give it our best effort and let time tell.
Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck.SCNewbie and Jester1962 Thank this. -
Thanks Leonsls. I think I have decided on Prime. Even with the exposure of a 1 year contract at least they pro-rate it to about $1700 after 6 months. I think for me it's a better option than $4000 out of my pocket or $6000+ in student loans. Best of luck to you as well!!!
