DD 12.7 L 500 hp oil in fuel tank

    Hey guys I'm new here, a lot of good stuff and good advises, this is my first thread and it is for a friend of mine, so any idea, advise, or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

    He has a 1999 DD 500 hp rebuilt just three weeks a go, but is using a lot of oil around a gallon every 2,000 miles, there is no leaks, but the fuel tank is getting oil from the motor, how is the oil getting there? I had a 1992 DD 12.7 365 hp and did the same thing, but mine had 700k miles and it got sold like that, but I never knew how the oil was getting to the fuel tank.

    It is possible to get, fuel in the coolant, and coolant in the fuel, fuel in the oil, no way to get it the other way around, no way to get oil in the fuel. I worked on them since they came out and never happened. CAT with a 3126, yes, not a Detroit. Just a thought!

    Thank you JohnP3, but most Detroit that I have seen have that problem, in fact I just replaced the fuel tank on my KW for Peterbuilt tanks and you should have seen how they were inside,I hat to cut them to make them smaller and was able to clean'em they were on a Pete with DD S60.

    I have worked on engines all my life and never seen a Detroit that put oil in the fuel PERIOD. There is no place on the engine that you have oil preasure near the oil galley and if the head split open and opened a hole it would put the fuel into the oil. Do not tell me how an engine works.

    Sorry John I'm not trying to tell you how an engine works, just telling you what I have seeing, I can make a promise of a picture but I'll try to remember , If I do you will see it for first time.

    john is correct.if the engine is in running condition,there is no logical explanation.only thing i can think of is that i have alot of old school customers that insist on filling their fuel filters half way with oil when they change them.multiply that by the number of fuel filter changes.

    Could be bad injector o-rings or a loose injector allowing combustion gases (soot) into the return fuel. I've experienced this and it will quickly turn fuel black--looks much like engine oil in your fuel tanks. Truck would run fine otherwise, but left a mess of the fuel filters. Repair isn't all too bad on the pocketbook if you catch and fix before you have progressive damage.

    Does the main fuel pump use the engine to lube the pump. I have heard of this on a cummins. If I see the guy I will ask him what it was. Wont be untill tuesday 5/29/10 or so.

    The fuel pump is just a transfer pump and has a 1/2 inch of open area between the drive seal and the pump seal. You can get combustion gasses past the injector, it mounts on a copper washer. He is not talking about combustion in the fuel tank. To see combustion in the fuel tank remove the fuel cap. and with a flashlight look. he is saying the it is putting oil in the fuel tank. A gallon every 2000 miles. I guess it is possible someone put plugs in the fuel pump weep galley and the seal is gone and transferring oil under crankcase preasure 1/4 of a pound, into fuel that is pressurized to 70 lbs. There is no oil lubing the fuel transfer pump just fuel. Also he says it happens all the time?
