Thanks alot for taking the time and effort to put all the details out there. There's so much more to becoming an O/Op than just lettering a door! All of this was a big help to me. My Husband and I have been talking to Buel Transportation out of Chessney, SC. Do you know anything about them?
So you want to "own " your own company

Yes quite a bit of unpaid hours getting started, you better have a lot of cell phone minutes or long distance on your land line!
Be prepared for unpaid hours, but it will pay off in the end.
Oh, did I mention a solid laptop with a web cam to do video interview's with more respectable brokers for longer term contracts?
If you ask me it has been worth it, and yes I'm a newbie but I did not have a problem getting freight with my own authority and also being fully insured.
It's not just driving the truck,it's managing your business to be as profitable as possible with the smallest amount of overhead.
Credit cards will sink you.
Quite a bit of info here on this and a lot of really great people also.
crusinGears Thanks this. -

What are the trucking policies for the big companies for a newbie to start out at? Do they have company drivers or do you have to lease the truck from them? I can't see you making any money if you have to lease and pay for fuel all the time?
Are there trucking companies that PAY for fuel and for the truck and everything?
Do all trucking companies pay for trucking repairs? If your truck gets stolen do you have to pay for it?
What are the companies for new truck drivers with no experience? Do they make newbies pay for everything? -
you REALLY need to read some more of the "Report a bad company" thread before you even THINK about doing a fleece plan! Seriously, the plans are not set up for you to make any money! If you want to be an Owner Operator" save your money up and then BUY a truck with bank payments and an operating capital account and go that way. But to lease and from the number of posts you have and no experience shown and this foolish question, someone has filled you up with some BULL that you can make money leasing a POS beat to death after 6 drivers Freightliner! And with NO experience how do you think you know how to run much less operate a truck?
I know I sound harsh but this is not an easy life, you can get chewed and spit out inside of several weeks after making zelch money except enough to pay the lease for the week and someone elses pocket! Company drivers do better in pay than a L/P because they have NONE of the BS headaches that an L/P has! Go read and research a little bit more then decide if you can win where so many have failed before you and a lot of those failures were drivers with experience that thought it would not happen to them as they fell after drinking the bottom feeder lease companies koolaid! -

Hi Guys. I'm new here, well, just finally signed up for an account. Just wanted to say awesome forum!!! It has been a huge help for me to get going o/o.
But I had a couple questions...
1. I applied for authority already and rec'd a USDOT# and a request for insurance. I called the insurance lady today and she said I needed to buy a truck before she can send over the insurance info to the FMCSA? Can I just put a downpayment on a truck and use that Vin#?
2. Would now be a good time to do the UCR? How long does it take to get in the mail if I file online?
3. I guess I can expedite my ny HUT thru comdata for whatever they charge. But what about KY? And KS? How long do those take to get in the mail?
4. If I go to the IRP office they can give me a temp. plate good for 45 days. How long should it take to get the actual plate in the mail?
5. Here's a good one too... For a $50,000 tractor & trailer I got quoted $5900 a year for insurance w/ a $5,000 deductable. How often do you guys have to use the insurance? Everytime there is a claim on cargo?
