A few days ago I was driving and came to a stoplight in my ranger nothing new. A daycab tractor trailer with a 53' van gets ready to make a right turn towards me. Since no one was behind me i put the truck in revers and backed up to give the guy room. I see this as being polite and making his day a little easier and I personally would appreciate this kinda respect when I start driving trucks but the guy fingers me and drives off? Did I miss something here?

I don't understand that at all. Please be assured that not all of us are like that particular ignoramus. I for one certainly would have been most grateful.

Could it be possible that he waved and it simply may have appeared to you that he gave you the finger?

maybe he thought it was an insult to his abilities. who knows. could he have wanted you to wait till he couldn't complete the turn and laid on his horn first?
you really can't know what people are thinking. some take offense to kindness as to think you are being condescending (for lack of a better word)

well maybe he did indeed give you "the bird".

maybe he thought you crossed the stop line, and wasn't paying attention.

maybe he thought you took too long to decide to put it into reverse.

maybe he actually didn't give you "the bird", maybe he raised his fingers in a "peace sign" that was so common a thing to do back in the 1960's.

    we won't really know.

but i'll tell you what, whenever someone backs up for me at an intersection, i usually "toot" the air horn, or i wave "thank you" at them.

so take it in stride what you saw, or didn't see.

and when you start driving, then you too can show "thanks" anyway you choose to do so.

:smt017 Maybe the driver thought you were insulting his skills by backing up. However, any trucker with that type of attitude probably can't
be figured out anyway! So don't worry 'bout it.

I under no circumstance think all truckers are like this by the way lol. After all next week i start the course to get my cdl and start drivin but i dont really consider myself a newbie yet b/c well besides riding shotgun or driving a truck across a yard i havent even had newbie experience. Also this was not a mistaken wave it was a slant nose mack (dont quote the make i was too stunned by the bird to be exact) the best i could come up with is maybe he did think i was insulting him i just brought it to get it off my chest b/c it kinda had been bothering me. I beleive a simple toot and wave is a good policy.

If that driver gave you the finger he is not a professional driver but more like a professional loser.
