I just ran across this (Still trying to catch up on posts since my return)...

I also hate to address something Portlanddriver wrote. It just doesn't seem right...but there is a flip side.

I'm not saying that this is the case all the time when we see an officer driving like the wind, but there are cases where he may be responding to a call where he is to arrive without the fanfare of strobes and siren.

Cases where this would be done, include crimes in progress where the perpetrator would likely flee if warned of impending arrival of the police.

    i also mentioned it Turbo.
it happens, on the occasions i have noted, in the middle of a 4 lane divided highway with no towns between (the middle of our county is forrested military land). the sheriffs work a certain "end" of the Co. and the travel is usually their commute from one end to the other. when i travel that stretch at a certain time of day every day doing my commute thing i see the same cars every day almost. the exception, i think ,is the troopers who patrol the hi-way. i used to give the benefit of the doubt to the LEO's but it seems way too consistent to be the case all the time of them responding "quietly" to a call.

I am born and raised in Illinois and the State Police here all go over the speed limit. I have been passed like I am sitting still! If you are in the left lane doing 70 they will ride you until you get over. Not every officer is going to an emergency. They speed because they can get away with it!! And they can report they patrolled their whole area x amount of times.

Texas still posts a 60 day/55 night truck speed limit on certain Farm-to-Market roads. Unless otherwise posted the blanket 70 day/65 night speedlimit applies.

I haul ###. Not 90 MPH all the time but always over speed limit on highway. How would you like it if I did the exact speed limit and if anyone passed me I write them. Plus it causes back ups if I go the speed limit. It's not cuz I can get away with it. When you first get on, it's fun but it wears off quickly. There are many calls that we need to get to but don't require lights and siren. Just get out of the way and go about YOUR day. If you see us in the hammer lane with porch lights on, move over and I'll keep you in my good graces.

On the flip side there are many Super Troopers who let the badge go to their head- What are ya gonna do?

A pickup truck rear ends a Central Refrigerated Truck in Joliet,IL on I80. I find it very hard to believe that the people in that pickup were not killed.

A lot of you hands just realy don't get it. There are MANY reasons to run 'silent'. Not the least of wich is that he may need to get 'there' ASAP but there is to much of a danger in heavy traffic that the 'party lights' would cause problems. This is road wisdom gained by experiance not shared by mr. brand new super trooper dull butt, shiney badge. Trooper shiney butt, dull badge just try'n to get where he's gotta be in the safest yet quickest possible way.

NOW for those of you who think his job is easyer than ours....He gets up and does the morning thang (IE S$@#, shower, shave, put on heavily starched drycleaned uniform over heavy and combersome bollistic vest over undershirt and straps on another 20 pounds or so of assorted equipment that is OH SO COMFORTABLE and slides OH SO COMFOTABLY behind the wheel of his/her cruiser and signes on for another 12HOUR day of climbing in and out rain shine sun snow ice...probably a minimum of 20 times a day. he/she DOES have a large area to cover and would like NOTHING more than to simply "protect and serve". Instead it's a near constant this call that call this drunk that druggie this one wants to fight that one wants to try out a new way to exit the highway...ALL DAY LONG!!!! LET'em run guys! and be happy you are NOT the abject of his/her current attention!

by the way, they ain't make'n near as much as we are, and take'n home less. so cut'um some slack. I wander how many of you would trade YOUR trucking jobs for weekly doses of THEIR kind of days? Not to mention getting paid even less but forced to stand in court 8 hours a day before a judge or several making sure that the affore mentioned perpetrators of stupidity don't get away with it....:biggrin_2556:
