I am currently working on a project in which I will have to submit a business plan to congress asking them to approve my plan. My topic has to do with NAFTA and the issues that the U.S. is having with the Mexican Truck Drivers.
I want to know what you the truckers think about the whole situation. Do you have any experiences with these Mexican drivers? Good or bad?
Do you have any ideas about what could be done to hold these Mexican truck drivers to the same regulations that American truckers must adhere to?
Thank you for any input you can offer.

Technically they are held to the same standards as far as inspections go through (CVSA) Commercial Veh. Safety Alliance. which are enforced by any certified inspector thru FMCSR (Fed. MC Safety Reg.)

Well you answered your own question:hold the mexican trucks and drivers to the same regulations that we have in place for us,and with the way the mexican government takes care of there own I don't see that hapening.Otherwise if it aint broke,quit trying to fix it
We need to get a handle on the illegals comming across the border,If we cant get a handle on that then what makes anyone in this country think that they can control the trucks...........DAH................ -
Not to sound predjudice!!!! I feel they should have a understanding of english language. I've delivered to a small spanish shop once, and could'nt understand the lady and vice versa, we both were frustrated.
That would help in the event of an emergency, or routine inspection, especialy if the officer doesn't speak spanish.
And I say this goes for Americans traveling into Mexico, they should know their language like wise. Enough to comunicate to a point of understanding.
Cause if I can't read their signs or vice versa, how did I know that was a no parking zone. Or the officer was telling me the road ahead is closed.
I do support my fellow truckers worlwide, we jsut need to figure out a way to comunicate safety on a universal basis.
And if I remeber correctly you do need to understand english to hold a CDL in the states. -

yes this is true but those are the ones that go throught the inspections or get caught in a roadside inspection,what about the ones that go around or dont get pulled over.
You and i know that there just isnt enough enforcement to take care of the trucks that are on the road now,and they want to let even more,and then who suffers when the accident rate goes up,and the government wants to put even more restrictions on us.
The mexican drivers wont care,becouse the worst day of driving in the US is still far better than the best day in Mexico.

You're absolutely right- here in CT they are going to start taking Troopers out of the weigh stations which are never open, and put them back into the local Troops, which means even less enforcment. Most truck inspectors are older guys looking forward to their retirement!

Technically, they are very good backers! They have to back into some of the worst docks in the world!! I dont know how they are at driving OUR super-hiways, tho. I know that they have to comply per the 'Trooper,' and have talked to DOT's at CA weigh stations to verify. The main problem for U.S. truckers will be that they will work for a fraction of what WE will and thereby reduce the overall income of truckers overall!! Still seems like eventually we U.S. truckers will have to go union...

I have a couple of friends that are state patrol men and have asked them the question of how they handle the Mexican drivers and they said, as least as possible. Most of the troopers don't want to fool with someone who can't speak English and who more than likely are over here illeagally. They had just rather let them go and say "ah, let the next set of scales deal with them."

Call me a prick but I put them out of service. Let the carrier deal with it. If I stop the violation and let it go - bad news-. If the operator gets in a wreck after, I'll have to answer for it. Dog eat Dog world. It's either their job or mine!
