Hello everyone. The company I drive for does quite a bit of freight to Canada. I was wondering if the health insurance our company provides us, which is thru Blue Cross/Blue Shield would cover me in case I had a medical emergency in Canada and had to go to a hospital? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I asked my insurance carrier about the same issue.

They stated they would cover it up there. I suspect they will be the same as down here and avoid paying as much as possible.

However, I recommend contacting Blue and asking them for the answer and request it in writing.

That's what I will do medic. I was just curious if anyone had been in a situation where they needed medical treatment and if it was a hassle with the insurance or not. I have been told that in some cases your insurance will expect you to pay the bill and then turn it for reimbursement. That would be fine if I had a boot load of cash following me around.

I have been going to Canada regularly since July 2004. Luckily, I have never had to seek medical there, but I think a friend did. Next time I run into him I will ask.

    LooneyTune Thanks this.

I hadn't been there but once before I started with my new employer and now I have been there 5 times since the first of the year. This concern never dawned on me till the last time I was up in Calgary and felt a little sick to the stomach... then I wondered how would my insurance handle an out of country claim if I needed it?

They will cover it, the doctor up there has to call the insurance company for pre approval of the treatment and a price for it. I had to go into an ER for a cut hand a few years ago and all I had to pay was my normal deductable. Best get with your benefits dept and ask them.

Nice to know Dryver... yes sounds like the best advice is to call my benefits department and/or the insurance company to make sure. I don't ever plan on getting sick in Canada(who does?) but it would be nice to know I won't get stuck with a potentially high medical bill.
