I have a proven work record not in the trucking industry, and left my last job to seek another career as a truck driver. I am taking almost a year off year off 11 months before attending a local truck driving school, will that year off be detrimental in getting a job?

The local school is 4 weeks 200 hrs. and works with Swift, Gordon Trucking and Werner. I know to stay away from Werner if I can.

    Great site by the way.

Not necessarily..... kinda depends on what you were doing in that 11 months; seeking employment or just "floating with the universe".

In any case, best of luck. Get as much "backing up" practice as you can because that's one of the hardest things.

Thanks for the reply. I have been looking for work. I have always had trucking on the back burner for the last several years and have spent a lot of time researching and reading this site. I just want to make sure that the length of time between jobs will not hurt my chances of getting hired.

I hear you about learning to back up. The training company will spend a lot of one on one time behind the wheel with the students.

Silver- my husband was laid off May 07 went to back to school for total of 3 semester for something else (didn't pan out) -got his CDL end of last November (CDL school not community college)was keeping the CDL thing on the back burner and went for went the other stuff was a no go. Due to finishing up school and personal commitments he didn't really start to apply for jobs until about mid to late January-school helped with that process. Went thru orientation late Jan-out with trainer Feb (1st or 2nd week d/t snow storms on the east coast things got messed up) I think cuz he could explain what he had been doing there was no problem.
As for the companies- you will read good and bad on pretty much all of them-the basic premise though, is if you go in with the right attitude, work hard you should do okay. Will it bite at times of course but pretty much there are not too many jobs with there are 100% of the employees happy all the time.
    Good luck to ya!!

Sammy you are correct it is all about attitude. Reading most of Oldienew's questions and answers and all the research he did has helped immensely. My hats off to him. My dad drove a milk tanker for a few years back in the mid 60's and due to the owner's son he quit that job and he never went back into trucking. With family obligations he wanted to be home more too. He did say that was the best job he ever had.

I plan on paying for my own training with a local company here in Reno so I do not get locked into working for anyone for a period of time. Half is part by the .gov.

Silver- yeah Oldnewbies posts are a riot and talk about having you sh*& together! 50 something years old getting into OTR trucking and spent time on here since last fall asking all the right (or wrong!!) questions. I learned alot reading thru his posts. I am starting to see names on here on a routine basis (well myself included.....) and I will tend to head to some of their posts. This forum was a HUGE help to both myself and husband -as I am learning what he does etc and can also provide some info to him ie CSA2010 or DOT stuff etc.
Plus it don't hurt that the people are friendly!!! :biggrin_2559:

" there are not too many jobs with there are 100% of the employees happy all the time. "

Shoot, I used to complain about management when I was self-employed just to "fit in" y'know??? Figured it wuz a requirement.:biggrin_2559:

An old trucker I knew used to tell me "If you meet a trucker who ain't complaining about something, get away from him. He's either gonna drop dead or go postal".:biggrin_2559:

    LOL Kittyfoot!:biggrin_2559:
I work from home now. Occasionally I get up and have to bug my cats and complain to them- I am an ex-cube-et worker (think Dilbert) and really complaining via e-mail to co workers is just not quite as much fun as standing in the hall ragging on your boss's #####!!
Of course do the cats listen or care?
When they start talking back to me in spanish though.... I get worried. :biggrin_25524:

If this "floating" includes saving up enough money to be able to decide on one's own terms whether or not to work for pay during a certain limited period of time, or better still, the rest of one's life, then sign me up! That's one buoyancy I can live with! :Ship:
