Just got home from a two day road trip... my TND500 had been working "normally". I turned the unit on as I was walking up the stairs to go to my 2nd floor study and perform the 1573 update and ###### if the screen doesn't read "Insert SD Card". My TND500 is a T5C that does not require a SD card! Same thing happens after powering in off and on and after a reset. Plugged in into my pc... unit says "connected" and the pc recognizes it as an external drive, but the drive, file and folder names are all garble... not even English characters.

Called Rand McNally support... surprisingly there was no hold time. Explained the symptoms... without hesitation, the tech told me the unit would have to be replaced. I guess that's the good news... I'll get a new TND500 (wonder if it will have the 1573 software on it?). Bad news is that I will have to wait to get a return label in the mail from Rand McNally and send my unit back before they will send out the replacement! I was told I should have the return label in about 3 days and if I send it back the same day, I should have my replacement unit in about 10 days! That's 10 days their time. Realistically, I will be without a working GPS for about 2 to 3 weeks!

    Great job Rand McNally!!!

    =================================

    Update on the above post...

Thanks Mark! You saved my butt!!!

GPS went down Wednesday afternoon. Mark replied to my initial post within a couple of hours with a request for me to email him. Exchanged a couple of emails with Mark on Thursday morning and he convinced me that my unit was recoverable and promised to overnight a SD flash card (with the 1573 software!).

Got home this afternoon (Friday) and there sits a FedEx envelope containing the card. Flashed the GPS per Mark's simple but detailed instructions, did a restore from my last backup in TND Dock and BAM... my TND500 is back up and working!!!

Two days ago, Rand McNally told me my TND500 needed to be replaced and the process would take at least 10 business days and now, 48 hours later I have a fully working updated GPS with all of my old data on it (except the logs... who cares).

Mark... We're lucky to have you in the picture!

If the customer support folks at Rand McNally were only half as knowledgable and responsive as you've been, there would be alot fewer frustrated truckers out there.

Thank you for getting me back up and working in record time!!!

    Mark Kling Thanks this.

I recently purchased TND700 and I don't think it likes Louisville, KY.

I-64 ex 4 on both W Market St + W Main St (either directions) - it goes bonkers about "low height clearance" + "not being authorized truck route" or something like that. Strange since other trucks goes through that area all the time and pretty much only way to get to Mercertown (various Mercer Transportations' yards) other than being dropped from the air.

I noticed its' local speed settings aren't that accurate in most places where speed limits changes. (I-76 in Ohio shows 55 mph all the way when it's 65 mph for most part)

The routing + speed settings aren't that good from Canton, OH to Monon, IN even w/ the newest updated files. My old PCMiler 20 routes better than that.

That's weird. Mine is still too dim at night with the brightness set all the way up.

I thought they might have but with u-turns set to avoid now, it's found a whole bunch more connecting roads. Some date back to the 1880's and I can't even see where they used to be. Others, you'd be lucky to make it through with an actual tractor. You'd end up with all the corn you could eat, though.

There are about 16 zillion posts on this thread and my ADD won't let me read them all, so here is my quick question (probably asked before): Is the only difference between the 500 and the 700 the screen size?
Does the 700 display more information than the 500?

Wait till you go to Gary Indiana! My TND won't route me to my company's yard because it says it's on a non truck route lol. The whole road is truck yards lol. Then try to get back onto the highway! It's right there outside the yard, but nope, the GPS wants to route you through the housing district.

The speed limits are in the Mapping Database. Until the newer Mapping Database is released you will see the speed limit errors.

Louisville, KY. At MATS RM found an issue on some of the freeways. I forwarded your info to RM, but I think we found a mapping error on I-64.

    Thanks,
    Mark

TND 700 has a HD screen, added calender, added notepad. Screen is larger and easier to read at a distance.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Even though the road may have truck yards there, does not mean that the road is a STAA route. Please let me have the road in question and I will have RM look it up.

    Thanks,
    Mark

The TND looks at many factors in determing a route. One of them being a "cost" factor. If the road is a lower cost factor than than another it will route you on that route. The two directions can show different roads with different cost factors. Other items might be bad map data and the south bound route may have roads incorrectly in the Mapping Database that will cause it to avoid certain roads. I am forwarding this up to RM so they can run this route and see the differences.

NYC routing has been completly revamped in the next Mapping database.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Brightness. I will send this back up to RM. It may be just your TND settings are not adjusting like they should. Some say not bright enough and some say too bright. It is hard to find a happy middle for everyone. Have you tried the mylar that they use on windshields? Maybe a lighter tint might help dim the brightness down. RM has not tried this on the screens so they have no idea of how this will affect the touch affect of the screen.

What intersection could it not find?

    Thanks,
    mark
