You're probably getting a little ahead of yourself since you don't yet know if you will ever haul Div. 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3 materials. If it turns out that you someday do, a written route plan will be required which will identify safe havens where you can park and sleep.
Good luck & be safe -
Maybe you can drive for them now, then when you get your endorsement you can haul thier hazmat loads - unless that's all they haul is hazmat.
-
I completely agree with you on that. Hell, i've been through the pennsylvania turnpike tunnels with hazmat, which a lot of drivers claim you can't do (read the darn sign!)
I remember that time, I had a couple of guys on the cb yellin at me for it...there's a picture of the placard I have on my truck (Corrosive class 8) on the sign as prohibited, but its prohibited *IN BULK*. I had packing group 3, not bulk. I remember one guy passed me in the no passing zone, i commented on the cb, hes like.."I AINT STAYIN BEHIND YOU, YOUR HAULING ACID!!" hahahahahahaha. These people act like you're hauling 55 gallon drums of it or something..
Mine took two weeks but I guess that's uncommon..
Yeah, and any of those are probably going to be escorted by unmarked vehicles just like a Motorola load, or driven by teams. The carriers i have worked for do not even haul division 1 at all, unless its in something like a walmart load (not placarded). Only minor hazmats like coffee creamer and car batteries..
Don't forget that with any hazmat, if you stop you have to check your tires and check for leaks, and if you leave visual sight of it you need to check for tampering. This has to be logged, but not for a full 15 minutes on line 4..just flag that as a hazmat check. It only takes a minute to do it.
And the old rule for checking tires every two hours or 100 miles is GONE. It is now every time you stop. I was out of the job when this rule was changed and i never heard anything about it until way after i should have. It was changed to reduce criminal activity because they knew when you were going to stop with the previous rule.... -
Some of these rules seem to not get enforced. I routinely stop at the same store each night with the gas tanker. I go in, use the restroom and sometimes eat since they have a great deli. The whole time NYS Troopers are in and out since the barracks are right there too and my placarded truck is unattended in the parking lot. They don't say a word.

As Mike MD pointed out, the attendance requirements in 397.5 apply only to division 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 explosives. The troopers would have no reason to be concerned with your flammable liquid load unless it was parked on or within 5 feet of a public street or highway (397.7).
-
It is. The parking lot isn't large enough to get away from the street so I am parked on the shoulder.
-
I hear ya. Smile and wave at the nice officers.
-
Oh I do. We have a few little gas stations that we can't even get off the road to drop.
We really need them to like us when I am on the shoulder at some little station dropping gas.

I just received my endorsement yesterday, 81 days from being fingerprinted. Everyone keep that in mind when applying for a hazmat job. You're dealing with the Federal Government now, so things are going to go at a snails pace.RAILSPLITTER Thanks this.
