Can I salvage this sensor plug for my CAT 3406E Thermostat?

    When I was working in the far norther reaches of what I'll simply call "the bush" in a northern corner of Saskatchewan, lots of stuff got rattled. A crusher crew foreman told me if you want to find out what's about to break on your truck, you bring it up north...'cause then it breaks and then you know. :biggrin_2559:

    Anyhow, please see below the plug for my thermostat. What I wanted to do was simply take the plug apart and put two new terminals in with new wiring to splice in so I don't have to buy a whole new wiring harness, pigtail or whatever. When I took the plug off, I thought the green cover just snapped off but uhh...I really did snap it...not off...just snapped it. I'm not sure if a truck wreckers will let me go after just the one plug; I'll find out tomorrow but is this plug still salvageable some how? As well, if I do want to take the plug apart properly to get to the tabs holding the terminals in, how do I actually do that without wrecking the plug like I did?

    Mmmm...so much tuition on trucks.

    Thanks for the link but none of those look quite exactly like the connector I have in my hand there. Is there a way to tell what connector may be compatible with the plug I pulled from the original?

    Do you have a cat dealer near you, or a company like stewart & stevenson that uses the cat motors on the field equipment. While at an Exterran Compressor yard in Texas I looked in the trash there were old harnesses in the garbage. I cut a few two and three prong plugs just like that one off for myself. Look for anyone that works on industrial cat engines.

    any cat dealer will have those in stock you can get the 2 pins and green retainer and just reuse the housing, I have rewired a bunch like that but any dealer for cat or has cat parts should have those.

    If there is anything left of the green part try to pry it out. Sometimes it does take some wiggling in and out, you can also spray it with penetrating oil, let it soak. There is no way to remove the terminals with the green part still inside without wrecking the connector body. If the lock does break get some small picks or tiny screwdrivers to try to pry it out. You can get rough with the connector body, just don't destroy it or it will never plug in again. Once you get the green lock out you will see two tiny grey lock tabs inside next to the terminal. They are part of the connector body. They are just plastic so they are somewhat flexible. Here is where you will need those tiny screwdrivers again, (like the ones jewelers use). Simply pry up on the tab to unlock the terminal and pull it out through the back, straight through the rubber seal. This is a "Deutsch" style connector;

    The terminals need an expensive crimper to properly fasten the wire.

    Most places only sell bulk packages of the terminals. You have to use the crimper, don't even think about using pliers or something to crush the terminal. It would be easiest to buy a couple of terminals that already have some wire crimped to it. We have several repair kits with the different types of terminals already pre-crimped with wire so all you have to do is butt connect it to your harness. But those are complete dealership repair kits. You can try your local dealer and see if they can sell you just a couple terminals or crimp them for you if buy some, what ever. If you go into the shop with a round of coffee for everyone they would probably just give them to you. There are some pre-wired connectors on Ebay you could buy cheap and then just remove the terminals you need. To reinstall just push them in from the rear until they "click" when locked from the internal grey lock tab. Give it a gentle pull back to make sure it is locked. If the green lock tab is still usable, just clean it up and reinstall it too. If the green lock tab is NFG you can still use the connector, just be careful when reconnecting it and make sure it is lined up straight. Good luck!

    Perfect! I have all the info I need now. Thank you all so very much, I was a little worried about this particular repair and the potential cost...now it seems pretty darned trivial.

    Cheers
