1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

I am 53 and have scheduled my CDL test. I drove a 24' straight truck for 10 years and have a million miles experience with that. I ran a log book and traveled anywhere east of the Mississippi. I did not have a CDL because the truck was registered at 25,999 gross. Is there a top choice to try as a rookie and/or is there any one to definetly stay away from? Thanks.

Welcome to best site for truckers,to start off is your going to read tons of bad and good about most of your companies on here. Most starters companies are the big ones.I always tell people is to do your homework on companies that interest you.Werner,Swift,Prime just to name a few are place to start.Once you get at lease 6-12 months experience you pretty much can go anywhere, not all companies hire newbies.I started with Werner and got my experience, best way to find a company thats right for you is to talk with there drivers,I used to got to truck stops and talk to truckers about the company they drove for.Any where you go you going have your up's and down's thats trucking.Good luck wish you the best.

I'm biased, but you might want to try Watkins & Shepard Trucking. A good starter company in my opinion. If you have your CDL, a 10 day orientation that turns you from a person with a CDL to a driver. After said 10 days, you are given the keys to a truck and off you go with no trainer. Definitely not for everybody, but you might want to give them a look. Google Watkins Shepard and you should find something...

With NO experience and NO CDL, just a permit, I am looking at Roehl. They have been recommended as a GREAT company for beginners. They also really value home time, which is important to me too.

Just remember, all companies value home time !!

Just some MORE than others !!!!

And it is very wise of you to consider that, priorities right !!?????
