What are the current regulations for having a laptop in your cab while driving. What are the proposed regs? How/where would one find that info in the DOT regs? How current are the posted regs?

If you're gonna be using it going down the road...Quit driving NOW and go back to work at McDonalds before you kill someone!

There aren't any regs against having a laptop in the cab that I know of. Using it is a different story. All the states have some sort of law against distracted driving. I'm partially agree with Black W900. Get off the road if you need to use the laptop. IMO the laptop belongs in its carrying case on or under the bunk. Get a voice command GPS if you need directions.

It's not far away. When they passed the texting ban on commercial vehicles, they commented on that computers were next.
I'm off duty in the sleeper when I use my laptop. I could see where some could use a laptop like a GPS. But most I see use it irresponsibly and it's a distraction when you have to turn your head to look at it while driving. That second could be the second traffic stops in front of you.

My computer stays stowed safely in my bunk area until I'm parked.
Oly an IDIOT would use a computer in a moving truck or in any vehicle while it's in motion! -
So I guess the driver that I saw with the newspaper laid out on his steering wheel going down I-20 was an idiot too. LMAO -
I have a laptop stand mounted to the passenger seat. The laptop stays there but is closed when the truck is moving. The only time I ever have it on is when stopped or when going to a customer I have never been to before. In the latter cases I have a couple of street level windows already booted. If I miss a turn or my directions are poor I can pull over , put the 4 ways on and figure out how to get there. Its easier to read than a paper map. -
I help my son in law operate a hot shot one-ton truck, it's a rolling office. Phone, copy/fax, internet, etc. The guy in the right seat does the "office work" while in route with a PC on a stand slighty to the left and in front of the right seater. We have been pulled over a few times by DOT and they have never commented on it. I have no idea what will happen if the airbag goes off.

I guess I should have clarified my intentions. I would not use any device which diverted my attention from the road. I do think of people responding to Qualcomm's etc. If you were pulled over and the Qualcom was not docked would you be in violation? My gut say's yes. I'm new and trying to sort out how best to use my resources and how to check regs. I will probably purchase a RM 700 and was considering other options to check against it. Glad to be on board.
I too just saw the article from the NY Times and related comments. I am not a fan of the times. In fact I consider it to be a rag. Also people who comment/input on subjects they no nothing about really gets under my skin
