I know that when I was driving with a light or no load and there was a truck creeping up a grade and needed to jump out in front of me I would letem on in. I know that once he passed the other truck I could get my speed back and pass him and not have a worry in the world. Whats the time difference if I would keep going and not let him in maybe a minute or so if I am lucky? whats the point and purpose of being a DI** HEAD like that.

I think I would love to have my own truck. But the expenses and the responsibilities.... scare the hell out of me.
I'm hanging in here, working for a darn big trucking company - and getting sick and tired of it - just to get some more time/ experience and then moving somewhere else... but I wonder where... Next co. may be just the same.
Have been self employed all my life. I don't tolerate being controled and exploited. Tired of moving from truck to truck... tired of not being able to have the truck that I want, and use the truck the way I want or need. Tired of being treated like their commodity, their slave. "Forced" to do whatever they want, go wherever they want...
I know, I can leave this co. and I intend to do that... just don't know where I'll go yet. Another co? Buy a truck?
Heck, with all the new changes in this industry, I wonder what will happen to us, truck drivers in general... I don't know if I'll like what is coming.

Rocks as long as you stay healthy and have a clean MVR then you can good. Just stay away from those darned buffets and eat atleast halfway decent food and excercise a little bit and that will keep you healthy.
Before I join the Marine Corp and I was driving a truck I would go and run a mile maybe 2 and do some sit ups and pushups and stuff just to keep myself in shape and healthy. O I didnt drink soda either which if you do and stop it you will actually loose a few pounds from it. Health as a trucker is hard to stay good and everything.
As for your MVR well we dont hreally have to be told what we need to do and what not to do to keep a clean one.southernpride Thanks this. -
now i had a driver come buy yesterday looking for a job and we spent some time together talking about the business and i could not believe some of the things he told me that these wonderful trucking company's are trying to make a driver do in order to get hired, what a load of crap , the more i think about it the more i love my trucks they may be old and i along with my drivers may have to work on them but by god there mine and i don't put up with any ones crap in particular a #### trucking company.
now he tells me that they pulled his dac report , now we all know how good that is or i should say how good they think they are but there was nothing bad on it but they called one of his references and they gave him a good reference BUT there safety dept didn't believe they were real so they ask this guy to give them that company's dot and mcc numbers now you no that was a legal request NOT, he refused and they wouldn't hire him, now i happen to know this company and they are in fact real they are a legal cooperation and as a matter of fact there listed in Dunn and Bradstreet but he refused to give them there dot numbers and they would not hire him , good company right. NOT .
another good company requested him to give them a copy of his w2 forms for the last 10 years, he refused and was not hired as a result, now your w2 forms is privileged information it is not required and the only one that as a right to see them is the IRS, it's none of there business how much money you made period . legally you do not have to comply. but i guess we have all become so job scared we do it anyway.
i gather most company's now want you to go back 10 years on previous employment, now i have no idea where or what i was doing 10 years ago and further more idon't give a ####, legal requirement hell no it is not just because a trucking company says it does not make there mouth a prayer book, what a crock.
another such good company wants a driver to go back to school and take a refresher course because he hasn't driven i a while yeah like I'm going to do that , #### i love my trucks is that a legal requirement , absolutely not that comes from a insurance company or a glorified safety dept that hasn't a clue what the law is . would i comply with that , o you no i would.
now here is a clue, all you are required to have to be Abel to drive a commercial vehicle is a cdl thats it anything else is made up by a #### trucking company or a insurance company it is not law if they say it is ask to see a statute number , you will find all you get is excuses because they can't produce one . in fact you don't even have to go to school, you just have to pass a written and a road test thats it your done , why do they ask for such? because they can nothing legal about it .but we all no an insurance company or a safety dept is always right, yeah you bet.
just how much are we going to let these people get away with before we say enough and start saying NO how difficult do they have to make it just to get a job and make a living before we say enough is enough, apparently we got a ways to go. #### i love my trucks.
why do all these company's do all this BS ? because they can. there are so many drivers out of work right now they no a good bit of them will do anything to get a job because they all have a family to worry about and these company's can pick and choose as they please and do what they please and get away with it . does that make them a good company? hell no it does not and if you have a choice you would be better served if you just walk away from them. if you go to work for them it gets worse further down the line.
you think the dot is responsible for all this ? i think not, whats the first thing a dot cop ask for when he stops you? your cdl he is responsible for the safe operation of a cmv and the laws that apply that is his job and although I'm not a fan of the dot his job is necessary.
and what i've said is just a few things these wonderfull compane'y are asking for , just to make it dificult for you , you might think about that the next time you apply for a job, thank god i do't have to worry about that.
i wish all of you well.-------southernpride
future driver, RAILSPLITTER, dino6960 and 2 others Thank this. -
ROCKS i undrstand very well how you feel BUT don't let it slow you down as far as changing jobs ALL AND I MEAN ALL TRUCKING COMPAnY'S ARE THE SAME it's a lot like diving in to a bath tub not very deep and they all look the same when you hit bottom.
as far as buying your own truck, sure there is expense envolved but you make enough money to compensate for the expense and ther is nothing quite like telling a trucking company to go pound salt when they try to screw with you and they all do, makes you feel warm ands fuzzy inside to be abel to just walk away.
having your own truck is a good thing i wouldn't have it any other way./
best of luck my friend .-----southernpride
Rocks Thanks this. -
I'm with you on the invasion of privacy stuff, but the 10 year employment history isn't some dreamed up requirement.
Part 383.35BIGLOU52 Thanks this. -
Take this for what it's worth (my opinion is always free of charge), and it's coming from a fatalistic individual who bought his own truck & trailer earlier this year.
Let me use an anology here. I decided I wanted to learn surfing. People warned there are sharks lurking, but I was not sure. There are others in the water riding waves. I jumped into the water when I thought I was ready. All my limbs are still intact thus far, and I'm riding waves just fine. I could have stayed on the beach just to be safe, but I'd have never learned to surf.
I don't actually surf (yet), but I became an O/O leased to Mercer 4 months ago against advices from others and I'm doing quite well so far (now some may disagree, but so far it has exceeded my expectations and that's what counts).
I'm not gonna say I'm not worried about what might be coming to this industry in the future. It certainly is prudent to take it into consideration, but you can't let it totally control your decision making because if you did that, you will never get to where you want to go as there will always be some bad news and you simply have no control over it.
I wish I had some magic formula how to become an O/O but I don't. Each individual has unique circumstances, obligations, and risk tolerance. What worked for me may not work for others. On the other hand, there are many out there who started with much less and still being successful. There are proofs all over on this forum.
The bottom line is, only person who knows when you are ready to go O/O is you. You are ready when you can say "You are ready" to yourself and your significant other without a moment of hesitation. I was ready to make the jump when I had enough cash and experience that satisfied my risk tolerance.
I think your determination is far more important to your success than anything I or others on the forum say and what might be in the cards for the future of trucking. Something worth having never comes easily - you have to be ready to do anything to get it.
And I'm with SouthernPride. Now that I have my own rig, I wouldn't have it any other way (Mercer is almost like Landstar - you can do pretty much whatever you want to do). I'll be ready to get my authority when I pay off everything.
Best of luck to you.Rocks, southernpride and KO1927 Thank this. -
It is in the implementation or perhaps the comprehension of this statue there is a problem.
It doesn't mention 10 years of continuous employment, or even any period of continuous employment. But that is how they implement it. -
No their checking your CSA 2010 report and if it looks bad your not getting hired. It is going to get bad for the guys with bad records.
kickin chicken Thanks this. -
It does not say a #### thing about showing them your tax returns for the last10 years!
