Hi everyone. I have owned 40 channel radios for a long time now and never ventured over to SSB. I currently have a Wilson 1000 mated to a Radio Shack TRC447. As nice as it has been for the price, I need or should I say WANT to upgrade to a nice powerful radio with SSB.

After reading the forums here I have come to gather that the Predator 10K and the Cobra 148GTL seem to have a bunch of votes from many people.

In my local area (Acushnet, MA) I cannot find one CB shop that "peaks and tunes" radios. I am hesitant on purchasing a CB that is labeled "peaked and tuned" on the internet. The only internet site that I did see that seemed reliable was cbcitydotcom.

I am looking to spend 400 dollars for the radio and antenna. Any advice you guys and gals can give is greatly aprreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

    JEFF

How does the SSB work? I mean, if I'm on channel 19, can I pick up an SSB signal somehow, or do I have to be on the upper or lower band? Thanks for any info.

To use SSB you turn it from "AM" to either "USB" or "LSB".

To talk on SSB the other party has to also have SSB on their radio.

So what you do is say "Hey Bubba, let's go to 38 lower side band".

So you switch to the "LSB" and then turn to channel 38.

Once there, you tune him in by turning the clarifier knob until his voice sounds clear and not like Donald Duck.

With SSB you can talk farther than you can on AM and not have to use any power in doing so. It's a more efficient method of talking to someone.

Sideband also has a different rule from the FCC, so even right out the the box, an untuned 148 radio will do 12 watts on side band, vs 4 on regular AM.

The 148 although I have not seen one in person, seems like a nice radio for my use. I have always used Wilson antenna's, but was looking at the 10K. Would that be overkill for the 148?

not at all, either antenna would work well with the 148 IMO...
