OK Trainers Why are you a trainer?

You ever hear the saying the blind leading the blind? Your company is one that has no idea how to train a truck driver.

 

As far as training i would say you would need at least 3 months behind the wheel.

Just kidding,at least 2 years and should be tested on his or her ability to train.

Cause i know people who have been doing something for 20 years and i wouldnt want to learn anything from them.

 

Just because I work for Swift doesn't mean I can't train someone. I can agree that some people who work for my company are complete nincompoops, but every company has 'em and some of them train others. Don't assume because some other bad eggs get through and become Mentors that we all are. My record will speak for itself:
-No service failures
-No accidents
-100% ontime deliveries
-No tickets/citations/warnings
-Passed all DOT inspections
-No Log violations

So please, Mr Gas Hauler, if you must do some painting, please don't use such a large brush. Also, if you'd like to discuss in person, dinner's on me.

I believe there are mentors out there that should NOT be teaching (if that is what they are suppose to do). My husband is with a mentor, who's a O/O through Swift, that is horrible. Long Story. here is short version he constantly yells # him, yelled # him today for going to the bathroom, puts him down and much more.He's in it for the money. His last day is tomorrow. Nothing being done about this mentor's attitude.there's more to say but very long story.

Somehow I don't see 10 year veterans running to the training companies to correct the "problem". My last co-driver had 8 months experience and he was an idiot. I doubt if he'll be any less of an idiot 10 years from now.

Some of you with 10-20 years just aren't realistic.

 

Have to agree there. His post says 2 , but profile says one. Does the profile update?

That said, some folks learn quickly and have the ability to TEACH (not train). These folks are rare and to be treasured, but are the exception to the rule. While I consider myself to be a good instructor (22 years teaching in the military), I personally would like to have 3-5 years before I started teaching commercial driving.

It's important to remember that not everyone fits the same (Swifty) mold.
