After 38 yrs OTR,I decided it was time to Retire.(Retired in 2000)
Looking at whats going on today in the industry,I glad I did. When I started in 1962,things where a lot different,Drivers where looked up too.
I did it all,I think.reefer,dry van,flats,heavy haul,oversize,liquid,live stock,
Explosives,etc..
No accidents,1 scale ticket (over length, 3")
All Canada,All USA.
Started when industry was Regulated,so I seen a lot of back roads, coast to coast..
Do I miss it??Absolutely Not..
Glad It's over

I don't blame you one bit, a few months ago we were seriously thinking of selling the trucks, as the money was not there and it cost more to run the business than we were making, and it was not just us, but most owner operators we know. We know a few who went bankrupt and some that got out before they did.
In the last couple years I have watched this industry go downhill fast, but we were finally able to get on a very good paying contract, if we hadn't we were definatly out. We are now able to be home almost everyday and make more money than we ever have made running OTR,
I have been coast to coast and north and south and everywhere in between, I enjoy being home more often now.
I know that the industry is not the same as it was when my father was trucking 20-30 years ago, and pretty soon it is going to be a job that only immigrants are going to want to do because the pay is getting so low that they are the only ones willling to work for that low pay. -

All the best, driver! I'm 11yrs out here now and even in that short time, I've seen this industry go down hill. I'm going to do about 5 more, then I'm going to do something thats as far away from trucking as I can!
Congrats on the retirement! -
After retirement from the hiway in 2000,i went driving local dump truck.I should have done it years ago,I took home more $$$$ every week than I did on the road, plus home every nite, plus week ends off,and holidays,etc..i did this for 6 yrs then retired completely..
These newer dump trucks are just as comfortable as any hiway tractor,A pleasure to drive,If I had to do it all over again,I'd stick to dumps..
