I got out of the Army last year, and I've been looking into trucking for a while. I hear so many bad things about companies that pay for training, I'm just looking for a dependable company to start out with. I live in PA, so looking for company in NorthEast.

So, I was looking at Roehl's site, saw student is responsible for cert., testing and lodging. This will be a problem. I am wondering if the GI bill or another program can help? Also, I'm wondering what the pay is like in the apprenticeship program if you are collecting from the GI bill. I work in a warehouse now for $8.50 an hour, don't have alot of money to invest in training.

Sapperdaddy, what I did was to get a hold of my local chapter DAV, informed them of my intention, and they helped me to submit my paperwork for VOCAB (Chapter 31). They are paying the entire sum for me to attend a CDL school here in Lakewood WA (almost like $8,000). They will also give you some money to help out while you are training, and in my case 30 days after my class completion to help out while I find employment.
This however cannot be used in tandem with Montgomery G.I. Bill (Chapter 30) or the post 9-11 G.I. Bill (Chapter 33). Also, to be eligible for Chapter 31, you need to have a service related disability rating of at least 20%. If you do not qualify for VOCAB it may be worth asking about the post 9-11 GI bill though, as I believe that this can also be used for it.
Hope this helps. -
You can always visit your local community college. They have financial assistance available.. Should be no problem getting student loan for somthing like this!
I'd STAY AWAY from all companies that want to train you and drive for them.. You find yourseld a slave to that company and if you quit they slam you with huge penalties and interest for training you...
Get your CDL elsewhere and apply as a student and go from there. OTR isn't the only type of driving out there... do some research and see if somthing else jumps out at you? Local, construction, containers, concrete trucks, livestock, tanker, car hauling, flatbed... dont get tunnel vision and think that there are only reefers and vans out there... AND that you MUST stay out for months at a time.. If that's what you want , sure it's there, but also know it's not the only way to go. -
