Anybody know how much turbo boost a stock 600 hp 3406E 15.8 liter cat should have? It's in a '99 KW W900. Runs strong but I was thinking it should do more than 26 lbs of boost. Thanks

32-34psi,check your wastegate could be opening early.
-
Thanks for the reply. How would I check the wastegate ? I also noticed the elbow coming out of the turbo going toward the aftercooler can be moved around a little. I was planning on replacing the o-rings on it. I checked the hoses on the aftercooler pipes and they look good.
-
Not sure on the measurements I think its around 22psi before the wastegate moves,Jas, Mr Haney or someone else will know.
Always check the CAC for leaks but I would put money on the waste gate opening early.
Whats your EGTs like??? If you are losing boost they should rise. -
I haven't run it hard/heavy yet, but the highest peak noticed was around 1000-1100 range maybe but i'm not sure. Steady cruising is around 900 degrees. Thanks again

If its getting to 1100 and its not running hard it will probably top 1200 on a hard pull and thats getting too hot.
Get your wastegate checked at a shop shouldn't cost much also get them to check the CAC. -
You could try to pinch off the wastegate hose and run it like that and see if you have more boost.
If it makes no difference its not the wastegate.
I wouldn't leave it pinched off though the C16 turbo is weak and you could end up breaking the shaft due to over speeding the turbo.. . . . .IMO
bigkw Thanks this. -
I was thinking about trying that ...............
-
27 lbs of boost is considered normal under full load........they can run as high as 31-32 lbs though depending on the wastegate actuator setting
bigkw Thanks this. -
the one that i have on my W9 is making around 38 psi running it heavy exhaust never rises above 1100.I would suggest that you check your hoses and your tubes from turbo to CAC and from CAC to intake manifold, during in-frame i replaced turbo, manifold, and all the CAC all the hoses but i still wasn't satisfied with the 27 lbs as soon as i got home i checked the tubes and surely there was a hairline crack on bottom of tube replaced it and the truck has been running smooth since
bigkw Thanks this.
