I JUST hired on with Schneider yesterday, after completing almost a week of orientation.
My OC is Carlisle, PA.
I start my dedicated run on Sunday.
The first truck they assigned me was an UltraShift and I had to trade it in for a straight ten-speed.
The Century Class they reassigned me to looked ok at first glance, except that it's got 486,700 miles on it.
I did my PTI on it and everything seemed to check out, started on my 1.5 hour trip to the house.
Well, I got out on 81NB and hit some real heavy traffic.
It wasn't until I was on 78EB that I was able to get up to highway speeds.
The front end feels like it's going to shake itself apart between about 45 and 55.
Not wanting to nitpick or rock the boat, I just drove the last 25 miles to the house and parked the truck.
My wife met on my way to the door and ask why I was so filthy.
Not knowing what she talking about she pointed out that the back and sides of my clothes were covered in grime.
I hopped back in the truck and saw that the bags the shop had put over the seat had come off/loose while I was on it and that the seat itself was almost black with the same grime.
Upon a much closer inspection of the truck, I noticed that the body of the truck, the entire length of the "bat wings" were folded in.
Someone had seemed to really like messing up their 90 degree maneuvers, it seems...
Well, anywho, would I be pushing things by driving this POS back to the yard and asking for another truck tomorrow?
At the VERY least I'd like to get the seats replaced as I really don't like the thought of sitting on them...
Thanks in advance from a "yearling" and a new Pumpkin rookie.
JUST hired on, need a newer truck already?

Might want to call them about the front end !!!!!!!!!!
-
Try calling your DBL and let him know the problem. Or better yet, since it's the weekend, look in your pumpkin pad for the shop number at Carlisle. Call them, tell them the problem. They likely would change out the seat for you.
The shimmy? That's a safety issue and should be looked at yesterday!!! You could wind up with new steers and an alignment.
The cab extensions? Forget about those being replaced, not gonna happen.
486k+? You've got a new truck there guy!! Crap, that truck is barely broken in by most standards.
The problems you have, other than the shimmy, are no big deal. The Carlisle shop, the last time I was there, was quite busy. They likely still are, so either be prepared to wait a couple days, or God forbid, get a loaner that the "Incredible ManPig" had previously.
Stick with it, give em a chance.

It's not the cab extensions themselves that are bend/broken.
The body of the truck that they are attached to is also bend in.
I see metal tearing at the top above the grab rails...
I suppose. (referring to your comment about the mileage).
My last company would have got rid of that truck twice by now.
I hope this company is going upgrade their fleet soon.
These trucks are starting to really starting to show their age...
I'm on hold now for the shop...
I hope they'll swap them for me (the seats)...johnday Thanks this. -
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm !!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are at the wrong company if you want a new truck !!!!! -
I worked for a primmadonna company once for a bit over a year. The drivers would start whining whenever their truck got 300k on it. Funny thing though, Conway bought them, and the drivers now have to put up with what they think are high mileage trucks. Mileage doesn't have tons to do with a truck, like it does with a minivan. These things will run great with double that mileage. Actually, I prefer a truck with around 500k on it, the bugs are usually worked out by then, that is, unless the truck has been abused.
Now if the metal is tearing out where the grab bars are bolted, I'd think that would be a safety concern as well, especially if it's on the drivers side.
SheepDog Thanks this. -
I'm not "wanting" a new truck, I'm just not used to driving one so old and torn up.
As for the metal tearing, that's exactly where they're tearing, by/past the grab bars.
Got off the phone with the shop.
I'm off to Carlisle in a few minutes.
Wish me luck... -
Alright! Hope you get what you need, just give them a chance.
Know what you mean about having a nicer truck. I've had some very nice trucks in the past. The way I looked at it with SNI, I've had nicer, faster trucks, made more per mile. But never treated as well any where, and that includes a very small company, they only had 12 trucks.
-
I use to drive an old international that had over 1 millon miles on her, granit the inside and body wasn't the best of shape, but I managed to get over 7.0 mpg on that sucker!! An never any problems with it mechnically eigther. Where I use to work, they wouldn't sale the trucks off until they reached a millon miles!!
-
My thinking too...
I was really impressed by their handling of orientation.
They really seem to have their s#!t together in that regard...
OK, so here's what happened...
I got to the OC and stopped at the shop.
The tech said that, as far as the bat-wings and seat were concerned, "it's not going to happen".
As for the shimmy, he ended up replacing the driver-side steer tire due to a heavy spot. (All the tires were brand new, BTW).
While he was doing that, I was on the phone with support in Green Bay.
I told them about the filthiness of the seats and they went ahead and reassigned me a truck.
I got the keys for it and went outside to check it out.
Lo, and behold, it's filled with someone crap!
I trek back up to Driver Services and inform them.
They hand me some bags and tell me to bring the truck closer to the building and start filling bags so they can put the stuff in storage.
(I later found out the the truck had been sitting on the yard since February, its driver having been put in the hospital for God knows what)...
Well, I do a quick PTI on it and all seems fine until I start heading up to the building. I quickly find the break assembly on the FR drives seized.
So I drag this truck over to the shop and let them know what's up.
BACK on the phone with Green Bay and I FINALLY get a truck that checks out!
And guess what? CLEAN SEATS!!! I'm now satisfied for the time being...
OK, I'm going to start another thread for my next question, since I don't feel they belong in this one.
I really hope you other pumpkin drivers can help me out with this: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...y-work-assignment-procedures.html#post1393780
Thanks all!
johnday Thanks this.
