Chocolate is made from cocoa beans that are ground and fermented and processed to produce the product that we know today. Certain dark chocolates have been shown to have some positive health benifits. The darker chocolates that contain a high amount of cocoa has been shown to reduce bad cholesterol, has certain antioxident properties and has been shown to modestly reduce blood pressure.
Now I know what most of you are thinking,"go get a big box of chocolates and chow down," big mistake! The darker varieties of chocolates that have some health benifits are not the same as what you will find on the candy isle at the truckstop or at an upscale candy store. Theres a huge difference. If you could find the type(dark pure chocolate) thats good for you, it would be so bitter that you probably could'nt stand the taste, and even then it would be so expensive I doubt that many of you would want to pay for it.
The chocolate that most of us are used to seeing is the milk chocolate and the way that milk chocolate is processed removes all of the healthy flavinoids and phytonutrients from the chocolate. On top of that milk chocolate is loaded with sugar, preservatives, saturated fats and calories. Studies have also shown that eating large quantities of milk chocolate contribute to some forms of cancer, diabetes, cardiovasclar disease, high choleserol and obesity. So if you are seaching for a way to speed up the decline of your health, chow down.
I just cringe when I see reports like this because the general public misinterprates these types of industry guided reports and feels that it means that they can indulge without the guilt of knowing that they are really ruining their health.
Don't get me wrong, eating a little chocolate every now and then is'nt going to ruin your health, but consuming milk chocolate on a daily basis is quick way to ensure that one day in the future you will be afflicted with one of those nasty health issues that I mentioned above. -
Oh yeah, as far as the demetia/chocolate connection goes, a company (Mars inc) based in virginia that spends millions every year on flavinol research is seeking a license to market pharmiceuticals that contain synthysized flavinol molicules(same flavinols found in pure dark chocolate) in a condensed pill form. Lab studies have shown that these flavinols in high quantities have positive effects on patients with dementia.
It's absolutly amazing how the media and industries that stand to gain a profit at the expense of others can turn a story to sway millions into blindly consuming their products.
